Saturday, but the Vikings fell 2-1 to Knox in their 2017 home opener.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Rodrigo Carvalho's goal in the 61st minute provided the margin of victory Saturday, as Knox defeated Augustana 2-1 at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach Mick Regan's Vikings, who were playing their 2017 home opener, dropped to 0-5 on the year, while the Prairie Fire improved to 5-2-1.

Sophomore Matthew Allen (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) put the hosts on the board first. In the 10th minute, he squeezed his free kick from the left side just inside the right post for a 1-0 Augustana lead.

Knox tied it in the 41st minute when Kobe Carreno scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Tom Driscoll.

In the final four minutes of the first half, Allen had one shot turned away by Prairie Fire keeper Justin Dunn and another sail high and the teams went to the break tied at 1-1.

Carvalho's second goal of the year, an unassisted tally, put the visitors ahead in the 61st minute.

Dunn stopped three Viking shots in the final 29 minutes to preserve the lead. The last came off the foot of junior Jack McKearnan (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) in the 84th minute.

Knox finished with an 18-11 advantage in shots, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Both Dunn and Augustana sophomore Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) recorded five saves. The Prairie Fire took three corners to two for the Vikings and the hosts committed 17 fouls to 10 for Knox.

Regan's side will be back in action on Wednesday, September 20, hosting Wisconsin-Platteville at Thorson-Lucken Field beginning at 7:00 p.m.
