Vikings drop 4-0 decision to Benedictine

Sunday's 4-0 loss to Benedictine.

AURORA, Ill. – Augustana fell 4-0 Sunday in its second game at Aurora University's Spartan Classic at Vago Field. The Vikings, 0-4 on the year will make their 2017 Thorson-Lucken Field debut on Saturday, September 16, hosting Knox in a 3:00 p.m. match.
 
The Eagles, who improved to 4-1, jumped in front 3-0 after one half. In the 19th minute, Nick Kapetanos crossed a free kick to Carlos Gallardo, who tallied his first goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, the same combination clicked, with Gallardo's header finishing of Kapetanos' cross for a 2-0 Benedictine lead.
 
In the 27th minute, Larry Meehan's first goal of the season made it 3-0. Erik Stammer was credited with the assist.
 
The Eagles' final goal came in the 81st minute when Aldeiron Smith scored off a Gio Ovalle assist.
 
Benedictine outshot Augustana 16-10 and put 11 attempts on frame to three for the Vikings. Augustana's shots on goal came from junior Jack McKearnan (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.), sophomore Matthew Allen (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and freshman Chris Plantz (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.). The Eagles led 9-1 in corners.
 
Sophomore Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) went the distance in goal for the Vikings, recording seven saves. His counterpart, Antonio Marti Polo, stopped three shots.
