Senior Sammi Farkos tallied the only goal in Augustana's 1-0
season-opening win at Bethel Friday.

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Senior Sammi Farkos (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) scored in the 73rd minute Friday to lift Augustana to a 1-0 win over Bethel at the Ona Orth complex. The match was the season opener for both teams. The Vikings are back in action on Saturday, September 2, taking on Wisconsin Lutheran in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 3:00 p.m.

The hosts got off the first two shots of the match, as Brooke Ogne and Maggie Sipe each had attempts go wide in the first 12 minutes. Royal keeper Kaylee Peterson recorded a save on Augustana's first shot, which came off the foot of senior Mady Huber (Legacy HS, Broomfield, Colo.) in the 18th minute. Those would be the only threats in a scoreless first half.

The Vikings upped the pressure early in the second period. Peterson stopped another Huber attempt in the 47th minute and a follow up by senior Grace Iaquinta (Lincoln East HS, Lincoln, Neb.) was wide. After a pair of Augustana corners in the next minute and a half yielded nothing, another by Iaquinta resulted in a Cameron Kekelik (Munster HS, Munster, Ind.) shot which sailed high.

In the 67th minute, Peterson recorded a save on freshman Grace Sigler's (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) attempt and four minutes later, an Ogne attempt was stopped by Augustana freshman keeper Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.).

In the 73rd minute, the Vikings finally broke through when Farkos headed in an assist from Huber.

The Royals mounted just one more threat. Ogne's shot at the 87-minute mark was turned away by Ion and Augustana ran out the final three minutes.

Farkos not only tallied the game-winner, but helped spearhead a defensive effort that allowed just four shots. Joining her on the Viking back line were sophomores Allison Harvey (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Hannah Rossi (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.). Ion recorded two saves and a shutout in her first collegiate appearance.

Augustana got off six shots in the match and held a 5-1 advantage in corners. Bethel committed 10 fouls to six for the Vikings.
