Junior Zachary Fuller will be behind center Saturday when Augustana
visits SUNY-Cortland for its 2017 season opener.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The 2017 Augustana football season gets under way Saturday, September 2 as Coach Steve Bell's Vikings travel to Cortland, New York to face SUNY-Cortland in a contest scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CDT. Bell welcomes back 41 letter winners and 16 starters from last year's squad.

Junior Zachary Fuller (St. Patrick HS, Schiller Park, Ill.) (50%, 1,520 yds, 10 TD last year), who split time with classmate Luke Bleyer (Williamsville HS, Springfield, Ill.) (59.6%, 1,035 yds, 4 TD) at quarterback in 2016, will get the starting nod against the Red Dragons Saturday. He'll be working behind a re-tooled offensive line that includes defensive converts senior Nathan Magiera (Wauconda HS, Island Lake, Ill.) and sophomore Chaz Williams (Princeton HS, Princeton, Ill.). They'll be joined by returning sophomore starters James Cousin (Oak Park & River Forest HS, Oak Park, Ill.) and Andrew Anderson (Marengo HS, Marengo, Ill.), while another sophomore, Tommy Simon (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) moves into the starting center role.

Fuller will have junior Ryan Pitra (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) (433 yds, 4 TD) in the backfield, while his targets will include sophomores Ethan Jennings (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) (15 rec, 252 yds) and Nick Karis (Glenbrook North HS, Northbrook, Ill.) (6 rec, 76 yds).

Junior safety John Asquini (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) is one of seven returning starters on the defensive side of the ball. He recorded 36 solo and 30 assisted tackles last year and led the Vikings with four interceptions.

Seniors Keith King Jr. (Richwoods HS, Peoria, Ill.) (24 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and Lukas Stoutenour (Cascade HS, Coatesville, Ind.) (17 tackles, 1 sack) return on the defensive line. They'll be joined by classmate Grant Burke (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) (26 tackles, 9.5 TFL, 4 sacks), who moves from linebacker, and sophomore Daniel Tjaden (Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) (14 tackles, 2 sacks), last year's Viking Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The linebacking corps includes returning starter Cassin Wolfe (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) (64 tackles, 5 TFL, 2.5 sacks) and senior Travon Aldridge (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) (35 tackles, 1 int, 5 breakups), who moves after three years as a starting cornerback.

Senior Jacob Stytz (Minooka HS, Channahon, Ill.), will handle Augustana's kicking and punting duties. He was a first team All-CCIW pick in 2016 after converting all 22 of his extra point attempts and nine of 12 field goal tries with a long of 46 yards. He's got a current streak of 62 consecutive successful point-after attempts and averaged 41.7 yards per punt last year.

Saturday's opponent, SUNY-Cortland, finished 5-6 a year ago and 3-5 in the Empire 8 Conference. Dan McNeill is in his 21st season as the Red Dragons' head coach.

Senior Steven Ferreira, one of five signal callers who logged at least one start for Cortland in 2016, assumes the starting role against the Vikings. He completed 40 of 65 (61.5%) passes for 577 yards and four touchdowns last year. Sophomore Brett Segala, who threw for 1,118 yards and 11 touchdowns in just four games last year, is listed as the backup.

Juniors Alex Wasserman (17 rec, 188 yds, 1 TD) and Nick Anderson (8-89-0) are the top returning Red Dragon receivers. Cortland's top two running backs, sophomore Zach Tripodi (398 yds, 6.0 ypc, 5 TD) and junior Johnnie Akins (277-3.3-4) return as well.

Cortland's top returner on defense is junior linebacker Mark DeLuise, who was second on the team with 72 tackles year ago, including six for loss and two sacks.
