Sophomore Nick Gallo scored the first two goals of the game on
Wednesday, May 3 to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage scored five unanswered goals from early in the third quarter until early in the fourth quarter and used that momentum to score a 5-3 victory over Augustana in the semi-finals of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's lacrosse tournament on Wednesday, May 3. The game was played in Kenosha, Wisconsin and the home team advances to the CCIW Tournament final with the win.
The Vikings had the pace of the game right where they wanted it and led 2-0 at halftime. Augustana scored in the contest's opening minute when sophomore
Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) scored an unassisted goal at 14:01 of the first period. Gallo made it 2-0 with 4:55 left in the second quarter with another unassisted goal, his 26
th of the season.
Leading 2-0 at halftime, Augustana watched as the Red Men scored five straight times. The first goal came from Andrew Krom at 9:07 on a power play with Andy Szun getting the assist. Szun tied the game at 2-2 with 5:07 left in the third on an unassisted goal. Carthage took the lead with :32 left before halftime when Krom tallied off an assist by Luke Seydel.
The Red Men then scored twice in the early going of the fourth quarter to pull ahead 5-2. Augustana finally answered with an unassisted goal by sophomore
Sam Daly (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) with 1:40 left but that is the way the game ended.
Carthage dominated the face-offs, winning nine of 12 and the Red Men also held a 35-27 advantage in shots. Augustana goalkeeper
Jeremiah Heredia (Warren Township HS, Gurnee, Ill.) had 10 saves in the game and he also led the team in ground balls with four. Junior
McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) recorded three ground balls.
Augustana ends its season with a 7-11 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the CCIW, good enough for fourth place. Carthage is now 16-3 overall and 6-0 in the CCIW.
