ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Carroll scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two Sunday to complete a doubleheader sweep of Augustana at Carver Field. The Pioneers used a three-run fourth to win the opener 3-2 then, after letting a 4-0 lead slip away in the nightcap, rallied for two runs in the seventh to win.
The Vikings fell to 7-15 on the season and 0-4 in the CCIW. Carroll improved to 12-10 overall and 3-1 in the league. Coach
Kris Kistler's club travels to Bloomington, Illinois to face Illinois Wesleyan in a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 14.
CARROLL 3, AUGUSTANA 2
After sophomore
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) threw a 1-2-3 top of the first in the opener, classmate
Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) led off the bottom half with a double. Two outs later, junior
Alaina Hofmann (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) blasted her third home run of the season for a 2-0 Augustana lead.
Fredrickson allowed harmless singles in the second and third and her counterpart, Amanda Osterhus settled in and blanked the Vikings as well.
The Pioneers struck for three in the fourth. Kelly Strasser and Lexy Kemnitzer sandwiched one-out singles around a walk to Hannah Miller. Kemnizter's hit plated Strasser to make it 2-1. Fredrickson forced in two more runs with bases-loaded walks and Carroll had a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Augustana had runners at second and third with no outs, but Osterhus eventually worked her way out of the jam, leaving the bases full of Vikings.
Both pitchers labored the rest of the way, with the sixth and seventh innings yielding a total of 11 runners left on between the teams. Augustana put two on in the seventh, but Osterhus escaped again to earn her fifth win in eight decisions this year. She gave up five hits and walked seven with five strikeouts. Fredrickson fell to 2-8 with the loss. She allowed eight hits and issued six free passes.
CARROLL 6, AUGUSTANA 5
The Vikings led 5-4 going to the bottom of seventh in the nightcap. Hofmann, in her fifth inning of relief, gave up a leadoff walk to Veronica Rodriguez. One out later, Miller and Kemnitzer each drew another base on balls. Elaine Anderson then delivered a walk-off two-run single to give Carroll the 6-5 victory.
The Pioneers took an early 4-0 lead off freshman starter Marissa Potter
(Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.). Miller knocked in Anika Graves with an RBI fielder's choice in the first and Megan Kohlmetz's two-run double was the big hit in a three-run Carroll second.
Augustana rallied with three runs (all unearned) off Miller in the top of the sixth and added two more in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.
Amanda Ebert's
(Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) leadoff homer in the top of the seventh tied it and freshman
Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) scored the go-ahead run two outs later when sophomore
Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) reached on an error.
Hofmann suffered her third loss against five wins this year. She allowed just two hits in 4 1/3 innings, but walked seven. After relieving Miller and getting the final two outs in the seventh, Kemnitzer earned the win to even her record at 4-4.
Wilson and sophomore
Kelsey Heiland (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) each had two of the Vikings' 10 hits.
