CARTHAGE 3, AUGUSTANA 1

Carthage's Katie Herron outdueled Augustana sophomore Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) in game one. Each team put a run up in the second. Darian Pelser touched Fredrickson for a leadoff homer in the top half and in the bottom, senior Amanda Ebert (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) singled with one out, stole second and scored on a single by sophomore Haley Ruch (Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.).

The Lady Reds took the lead with an unearned run in the third. Kristine Herdegen had a one-out double and scored the go-ahead run on an error an out later.

Brooke Sefcik's two-out solo homer in the top of the fourth gave Herron some insurance.

The Vikings left runners stranded at second in the third and fourth innings and Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) had a leadoff double and reached third in the sixth, but was left stranded as well.

Herron set Augustana down in order in the seventh for her fourth win in six decisions. She allowed six hits and walked none while fanning seven. Fredrickson went the distance as well, giving up eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts. She absorbed the loss, falling to 2-6 on the year.

Sophomore Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) had a pair of hits for the Vikings.

CARTHAGE 12, AUGUSTANA 9

Six Vikings had multiple-hit games in the nightcap, but Carthage rallied from a 5-0 deficit after a half inning and went on to win 12-9.

Walks to sophomore Rachel Anderson (Rochester HS, Rochester, Ill.) and Grandt started a five-run top of the first for Augustana. Junior Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) singled in Anderson with the game's first run. After a Lady Red error, freshman Alyssa Klahn (Lincoln-Way Central, New Lenox, Ill.) drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Sophomore Danielle Klatt (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added a two-run single in the frame and Hannah Bulgart (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) singled in Klahn with the final run.

Carthage answered with three runs in the first and four (all unearned) in the second off starter Klatt and added two more off junior Alaina Hofmann (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) in the third to go up 9-5. The big hits were two-run singles by Hailey Rothstein in the first and Vivian Juarez in the third.

Hofmann and Carthage reliever Rachel Fanella settled in and matched goose eggs until the top of the sixth. Wilson led off with a double, Grandt singled and Hofmann loaded the bases when she reached on a fielder's choice that failed to yield an out. Blumberg singled in one run and Klahn delivered a two-run double. Clare Kramer's (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) two-out RBI single plated Klahn and the contest was tied 9-9 going to the bottom of the sixth.

With a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh, the Vikings left two runners stranded and Carthage won it in the bottom half. Fredrickson came on in relief of Hofmann and hit consecutive batters with one out. Kay Uhwat-Vicicondi followed with a three-run walk-off homer for a final of 12-9.

Herron came on in relief and pick up the win to go to 5-2. Fredrickson took her second loss of the day and dropped to 2-8. Wilson had three hits to lead the Augustana attack. Grandt, Blumberg, Klahn, Klatt and Kramer each had a pair. Klahn scored two runs and drove in three. Blumberg scored two and knocked in two and Klatt had two RBI as well.
