Sophomore Sam Daly had five goals and two assists in Augustana's
19-6 win over Dubuque Wednesday at Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Five Augustana players scored three goals or more Wednesday night, as Augustana opened CCIW play with a 19-6 win over Dubuque at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach
Dan Torie's squad improved to 5-6 on the year and 1-0 in the conference, while the Spartans dropped to 7-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The scoring started slowly, with sophomore
Sam Daly (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) putting the hosts ahead 1-0 at the 6:50 mark of the first quarter. Classmate
Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) assisted on Daly's goal. Dubuque's Josh Berry-Wingate, with an assist from Michael Julius, tied it with his 24th goal of the season at the 1:27 mark. With 59 seconds left, junior
John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.)—returning from a season-long injury—scored for the first time this year off another Borgetti assist and Augustana led 2-1 after one.
Danko's goal sparked an 8-0 Viking run over a seven and a half-minute span. Daly tallied two more goals during the spree, as did sophomore
Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.). Danko added another, along with senior
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) and Borgetti. Seven different players assisted on the eight goals.
Julius assisted on a Berry-Wingate goal again with 4:09 left in the second, but junior
Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) scored off a Gallo assist at 1:38 and Borgetti found the net with 17 seconds left to give the Vikings an 11-2 advantage at intermission.
Hawkins, Danko, Gallo and Borgetti scored the first four goals of the third quarter as the lead reached 15-2. Spartans Matt Penalvert and Michael Jango scored in the last two minutes to cut the margin to 15-4 heading to the fourth period.
Augustana opened the quarter with four straight goals as well. Hawkins scored his third of the game and Daly sandwiched his fourth and fifth of the night around Danko's fourth. Dubuque's Tyson Svoboda accounted for the final with a pair of goals in the last eight minutes.
The Vikings dominated statistically, with advantages of 45-33 in shots, 42-23 in ground balls and 19-8 in faceoffs won. Augustana was also perfect on 16 clear attempts, while the Spartans were successful on 11 of 17. The hosts committed 16 turnovers to 21 for Dubuque.
Daly added a pair of assists to his game-high five goals. Danko had four goals and an assist in his first action of the year. Borgetti had three tallies to go with a game-high four assists and Hawkins and Gallo each finished with three goals and three helpers.
Junior
McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) won 19 of 28 (.679) faceoffs and collected a game-high six ground balls. Sophomore
Brian Hinsberger (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) led the Vikings with two caused turnovers.
Sophomore
Jeremiah Heredia (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) played the first 39 minutes in goal, allowing two goals and making five saves to earn his fifth win in 11 decisions.
On Saturday, April 8, Augustana travels to Aurora to face another band of Spartans. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
