ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana honored its three seniors Sunday before the team's regular season lacrosse finale versus Hamline at Thorson-Lucken Field.
Hanna Gobeille (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.),
Anne Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) and
Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) then went out and led the Vikings to an 18-8 victory over a Piper outfit that came into the contest with a 13-3 record. Coach C.J. Durham's squad heads into postseason play at 10-6.
The visitors bolted to a 3-1 lead after three and a half minutes. Dana Almquist scored her 57th and 58th goals of the year for Hamline and Radian Lenz added another off a Dani Perry assist. Augustana's first goal came from Hopkins, with Mayer assisting.
At the 26-minute mark of the first half, Mayer tallied an unassisted goal to start a 12-1 Viking run to close the half. After Hopkins' unassisted goal at 21:51 tied it 3-3, the duo teamed up for the next three scores as well. Hopkins assisted on two Mayer goals and Mayer returned the favor as Augustana went up 6-3.
Lexus Tatge stemmed the tide temporarily with a goal at the 7:23 mark, but the Vikings exploded for seven goals in the final seven minutes of the half. Mayer and sophomore
Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) each scored twice in the spurt and Hopkins and sophomores
Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) and
Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) once each. Hopkins finished the half with four goals and four assists, while Mayer had five and three, respectively and Augustana took a 13-4 lead into the locker room.
Hopkins' goal a minute into the second half triggered the running clock for the first time of four times, but Hamline continued to stop it by answering. Consecutive goals by Bennett and Hopkins gave the Vikings their biggest lead of the afternoon, 17-6 with 17:25 to play, but Brayden Maass and Tatge scored for the Pipers and the final eight and a half minutes of the contest were played under regular timing rules.
Fittingly, Mayer fed Hopkins with 1:29 left for the final goal of the contest.
Hopkins finished the day with eight goals and four assists. Her 12 points were the second-most in school history, trailing only Hilary Kargl's 14 at Berry on February 25, 2012. Hopkins' eight goals tied Kargl for the third-highest single-game total in program history and only Kargl, with games of 14 and 10, has ever scored more for the Vikings.
Mayer had five goals and five assists for 10 points on the day—tied for fifth-most in a game for Augustana. Kargl had held the top six single-game point totals in Viking history when the day started. Mayer also had a game-high six ground balls and shared game high honors in caused turnovers with Gobeille (three each) and in draw controls with Bennett (four each).
Sophomore
Madalynne Russell (Noblesville HS, Noblesville, Ind.) and junior
Analia Fowler (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) split time in goal. Russell went the first half, recording two saves, while Fowler stopped four Hamline shots in the second half. Russell got the win to go to 3-1 on the season.
Durham's outfit, which won the CCIW regular season title at 6-0, will go into the conference tournament as the top seed. Augustana will host fourth seed North Central in a semifinal at Thorson Lucken Field on Wednesday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m.
