Late surge pushes Colorado College past Vikings

Senior Anne Hopkins scored five goals Saturday, but Augustana suffered
a 20-12 setback at the hands of Colorado College at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Colorado College scored nine straight goals in a span of 10 minutes in the second half Saturday, coming from behind for a 20-12 win over Augustana at a soggy Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings, who had a six-game winning streak snapped, fell to 9-6 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 13-4. Coach C.J. Durham's outfit wraps up the 2017 regular season on Sunday, April 30, hosting Hamline at 2:00 p.m.
 
Anne Hopkins' (Mother McAuley S, Chicago, Ill.) fifth goal of the afternoon put Augustana on top 12-10 with 15:09 to play. However, that would be the Vikings' final score of the contest, as Colorado College tallied nine unanswered goals starting with one by Annie DeFrino with 12:42 left.
 
Ellie Meyer scored for the Tigers at the 11-minute mark to tie it a 12-12 and added three more goals in the next three minutes. Steph Kelly and Sadie Cole also scored as the visitors went up 17-12 at the 8:16 mark. Kelly scored again and Lily Benjamin found the net at 5:26 to make it 19-12.
 
Eva King's free position goal with 38 seconds left was Colorado College's tenth in a row and completed the scoring for the day.
 
The hosts took an early 3-0 lead, as Hopkins sandwiched a pair of goals around one by Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) in the first four and a half minutes. Benjamin scored twice as the Tigers responded with five straight goals. Mayer and Hopkins each had an unassisted goal to make it 5-5 at the 12:14 mark of the first half.
 
After Colorado College went up 8-6, freshman Samantha Wright (Pattonville HS, St. Louis, Mo.) scored off a Mayer assist 13 seconds before halftime and the Vikings trailed just 8-7 at the break.
 
Bailey Aasen's (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) free position goal three minutes into the second half tied the contest and Augustana took a 9-8 lead on Emily Lucnik's (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) man-up goal with 23:41 remaining. Mayer tallied the fourth consecutive Viking goal to make it 10-8 at the 20:54 mark.
 
Goals by Benjamin and Cole knotted the score again, but Hopkins answered with a free position goal and another off a breakout to put Augustana up 12-10, setting the stage for the Tigers' big rally.
 
Colorado College finished with advantages of 40-24 in shots, 32-26 in ground balls and 19-15 in draw controls. The Vikings turned it over 35 times to 24 for the visitors.
 
Hopkins finished with five goals and Mayer added three, along with Augustana's lone assist. Mayer also led the way with four ground balls, 10 draw controls and three caused turnovers. Madalynne Russell (Noblesville HS, Nolesville, Ind.) played the first half in goal, allowing eight goals and making three saves. Analia Fowler (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finished up with eight saves in the second half.
 
Meyer led the Tigers with five goals. Benjamin added four and DeFrino and Kelly three each.
