Augustana captured its third straight undefeated CCIW title Wednesday
night with a 14-4 win over Carroll at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana defeated Carroll 14-4 Wednesday night at Thorson-Lucken Field, locking up its fifth consecutive undefeated conference championship in the process. The Vikings claimed their third straight CCIW title with a 6-0 record and are now 36-0 all-time in league contests. They competed as an independent during the program's inaugural season of 2012 and were two-time Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference champions before the CCIW began sponsoring the sport in 2015. Coach C.J. Durham's squad is now 9-5 on the season. The visiting Pioneers dropped to 2-14 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

The hosts started out slowly. Carroll tallied the game's first goal, with Katie Majewski scoring off an assist from Betty Koenig at 25:44 of the first half and the Pioneers were still even at 3-3 nearly midway through the period.

Just 16 seconds after Majewski's goal, seniors Anne Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) teamed up to get the equalizer. Hopkins got the goal with an assist from Mayer. Two and a half minutes later, Hopkins returned the favor, assisting on a Mayer tally that put Augustana up 2-1. At 21:06 Mayer scored again, this time off a feed from sophomore Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.), but the Pioneers answered with two straight to tie it. Amanda Ferr scored and then assisted on an Arianna Ritter goal that made it 3-3 with 19:32 left in the half.

It wasn't until Hopkins' free position goal with 15:19 left in the half that the Vikings had the lead for good. That tally started a string of seven consecutive Augustana goals to close the half. Hopkins added a goal and three more assists before halftime. Sophomore Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) had two goals and two assist during the same span and McCabe scored twice as well. Sophomore Emily Lucnik (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) accounted for the other Augustana tally as they took a 10-3 lead to the break.

After sophomore Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Ritter traded goals in the first nine minutes of the second half, the Vikings scored the final three—two by Mayer and one by Hopkins—triggering a running clock for the last 14:10 of the game.

Augustana ended up with advantages of 24-7 in shots, 24-22 in ground balls and 15-5 in draw controls. The Vikings turned it over 26 times to 28 for Carroll and converted seven of eight clear attempts to 12 of 27 for the Pioneers.

Hopkins finished the night with four goals, five assists and five ground balls. Mayer scored four times, had one assist and caused six turnovers, coming within one of the program's single-game record. Bennett and McCabe each had two goals and two assists and Bennett added six draw controls.  Sophomore Madalynne Russell (Nobelesville HS, Noblesville, Ind.) went the first 44 minutes in goal and got the win to improve to 2-1 on the year. Junior Analia Fowler (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finished up and recorded two saves in just over 16 minutes of action.

On Saturday, April 29, Augustana hosts powerful Colorado College in an 11:00 a.m. contest at Thorson-Lucken Field.
