KENOSHA, Wis. – A second half onslaught by Carthage helped wipe out a 4-1 Augustana lead at halftime and allowed the Red Men to pick up an 8-5 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's lacrosse victory on Wednesday, April 26 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Vikings scored three goals in the second period to build that three-goal lead at intermission but the home team dominated the game statistically in the second half.

Sophomore Sam Daly (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) opened the scoring for Augustana with a power-play goal off an assist from senior Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Ill.) at 7:26.

Following Daly's goal neither team scored in the  first period but Augustana put up three goals in the second stanza to take a 4-0 advantage. Sophomore Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) scored unassisted early in the quarter 13:25 and then junior John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) hit the nets unassisted at 2:06 to make it 3-0. With just 1:15 to play in the first half Daly scored again, this time on another power play with an assist from Gallo.

Carthage got a goal with just one tick left on the clock before halftime when Andy Szun tallied unassisted.

In the third quarter the Vikings went ahead 5-1 when sophomore Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) scored unassisted at 11:44.

That would be it for Augustana in terms of scoring, however. Carthage scored the final seven goals of the match to claim an 8-5 victory.  The Red Men held a huge 45-18 advantage in shots for the game, including a 26-4 edge in the second half. Carthage won the ground ball battle 30-16 and won 14 of 15 face-offs.

Head coach Dan Torie's team fell to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in the CCIW with the loss while Carthage moved to 14-3 and 5-0. The Vikings will play Elmhurst at home on Saturday, April 29 at Thorson-Lucken Field. Face-off for the Senior Day game is set for 2:00 p.m.
