Senior Peter Doughty had four hits and four RBI Sunday in
Augustana's doubleheader split with Illinois Wesleyan.
MOLINE, Ill. – Augustana and Illinois Wesleyan swapped blowout wins Sunday, as the teams split a doubleheader at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The Vikings won the opener 14-5 and the Titans came back to take the nightcap 12-2. Coach
Greg Wallace's club is now 24-9 on the year and in third place in the CCIW at 10-7. IWU leads the league at 12-5 and is 19-12 overall this season. The teams will complete the series with a single game in Bloomington, Illinois on Tuesday, April 25. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
AUGUSTANA 14, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 5
Augustana put six runs on the board in the first three innings against Titan starter Jonathan Vlk. After
Brad Dubow (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) set the Titans down in order in the top of the first,
Peter Doughty's
(York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) sacrifice fly scored
Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) in the bottom half to put the hosts on top.
The Titans tied it with an unearned run in the top of the second, but the Vikings answered with two in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch and Kairis' sacrifice fly.
John Moraski (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, Ill.) had an RBI double and
Cayton Wallace (Assumption HS, Rock Island, Ill.) an RBI single as Augustana scored three in the third to go up 6-1.
Jacob Houghton's two-run double and Jake Stewart's two-run single in the top of the sixth trimmed the Viking lead to 6-5, but Wallace's bunch kept tacking on runs. Doughty had a two-run single in a three-run sixth. Five walks, a hit batter and an error led to four Augustana runs in the seventh and
Carter Amundsen (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) doubled in a run in the eighth.
Freshman lefty Justin Meyer
(Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.), who came on in relief of Dubow to start the seventh, retired the last eight Titans he faced to earn his third save. Dubow allowed eight hits and three earned runs in six innings. He walked two and fanned six and improved to 3-0 with the win. Vlk took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the year.
Six Vikings, including the first five hitters in the lineup, had two hits apiece. Kairis scored four runs and Doughty knocked in four.
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 12, AUGUSTANA 2
IWU banged out 22 hits in winning game two. Pat Mollo's RBI single in the first got the visitors on the board and the Titans added a n unearned run off freshman
Chris Refka (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) to lead 2-0 after a half-inning.
Refka put up three straight goose eggs and Augustana got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Doughty scored on a Moraski sacrifice fly. Wesleyan still led 3-2 after the teams traded runs in the fifth. Stewart had a leadoff triple for the Titans and scored on a Garrett Shea sacrifice fly. Junior
Tyler Nunez led off the bottom half with a double and scored on a Kairis sac fly.
IWU started to pull away with two runs in the sixth. Houghton doubled in Gino Cavalieri and scored on a Nick Figus sacrifice fly. A Jonathan Broadbear sac fly in the seventh made it 6-2 before the Titans tallied a half-dozen in the top of the ninth. Stewart's two-run double was the big hit.
Chris Refka went 5 1/3 innings and allowed 12 hits and four earned runs. His brother,
Nick Refka (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.), went the last 3 2/3. Chris suffered the loss, falling to 0-2. IWU starter Jim O'Brien went 5 1/3 and moved to 2-0 with the win. Nick Brune threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his second save.
Doughty had the Vikings' only multi-hit performance with a pair of singles. Stewart and Jarrod Juskiewicz each had four hits for Wesleyan.
