WHEATON 4, AUGUSTANA 3
Sophie Kent's one-out, solo home run in the top of the seventh lifted the Thunder to a win in the opener. Augustana's
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) got Jaclyn McLean to ground out to start the inning, but Kent's homer down the left field line put Wheaton on top 4-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Thunder starter Kendall Kehres gave up a one-out hit to sophomore
Rachel Anderson (Rochester HS, Rochester, Ill.), but freshman
Brittany Pospishil (Lincoln-Way Eat HS, Mokena, Ill.) lined into a double play to end the game.
The hosts jumped in front 2-0 in the first. Singles by sophomore
Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) and junior
Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) preceded a two-run double by senior
Amanda Ebert (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.).
The Thunder got on the board against Fredrickson in the fourth. Kelly Thornton had a leadoff double and scored on a Morgan Ryan groundout. Wilson's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth made it 3-1 Vikings, but Wheaton tied it with two runs in the top of the sixth. Thornton homered to center and Sage Miller doubled and eventfully scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Fredrickson suffered the loss, falling to 4-10 on the season. She went the distance and surrendered four runs on seven hits, walking one and fanning three. Kehres got the win to improve to 6-11.
Wilson paced the Augustana offense, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one driven in. Hofmann and sophomore
Haley Ruch (Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.) each had a pair of hits.
AUGUSTANA 9, WHEATON 0
Klatt (1-4) earned her first win in the nightcap. She allowed just two singles in going the full five innings of the mercy rule-shortened contest.
McLean set the Vikings down without a run in the first two innings, but they pounced on her for four in the top of the third. Freshman
Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) started things with a two-out single up the middle. She scored the game's first run on a
Taylor Belo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) double. Pospishil singled in Belo and Hofmann punched a homer down the line in right—her team-leading fifth of the year.
Augustana tacked on four more in the fourth. Falk drove in a run with a groundout, Belo singled in two more and Pospishil had an RBI single as well.
The Vikings plated the final run in the top of the fifth. Klatt drew a leadoff walk and was squeezed in by freshman
Amanda Ray (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.). She retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame to end the game early.
Belo finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three knocked in. Pospishil and Hoffman each had two hits and two RBI and Klatt and freshman
Alyssa Klahn (Lincoln-Way Central, New Lenox, Ill.) also had two hits each.
