Danko's four goals lead Vikings to 18-2 win at Carroll

Junior John Danko scored four goals in Augustana's 18-2 win
at Carroll Saturday.

WAUKESHA, Wis. – After falling behind on a Carroll goal less than two minutes in, Augustana scored the next 12 and went on to an 18-2 win over the Pioneers Saturday at Schneider Stadium. The Vikings improved to 7-8 on the year and are currently in third place in the CCIW at 3-1. The hosts dropped to 4-10 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
 
Christopher Bechtel scored off an assist from Jeffrey Schultz with just 1:52 gone in the contest to put Carroll up 1-0. The lead lasted a little less than seven minutes, until Nick Gallo's (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) unassisted goal with 6:30 left in the first quarter tied it.
 
Sophomore Lee Whorwell scored at the 4:31 mark of the first to put Coach Dan Tories' team up for good. Gallo scored again and junior John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) and sophomore Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) added goals as the Vikings took a 5-1 lead after one period.
 
Sophomore Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) found the net three times in the second quarter, while Gallo and Whorwell scored again to send Augustana to the locker room with a 10-1 lead.
 
Danko opened the third quarter by scoring with the Vikings a man up. Sophomore Erick Krall's (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) unassisted goal made it 12-1 before the Pioneers got on the board again. Schultz scored off a Chris Bechetl assist to stanch the flow temporarily, but Borgetti assisted on goals by Danko and senior Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) and junior Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) scored an unassisted goal to give Augustana a 15-2 lead after three.
 
Fourth-quarter goals by Danko, Van Dyck and senior Cameron Mager (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) accounted for the final.
 
The Vikings dominated statistically as well, with advantages of 53-11 in shots, 55-28 in ground balls and 15-8 in faceoffs. Carroll committed 41 turnovers to 26 for Augustana.
 
Danko scored four goals. Borgetti had three goals and three assists and Gallo scored three times as well. Junior Cameron MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and sophomore Matt Balara (St. Charles North HS, Elburn, Ill.) collected six ground balls each and Balara caused five turnovers. Junior McKay Potter (Hudson HS Hudson, Wis.) won 14 of 20 faceoffs.
 
Junior Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) got the start in goal and played the first half to get the win and improve to 2-0 on the year. Freshman Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) played the second half and recorded the Vikings' lone save.
 
Torie's bunch travels to Kenosha, Wisconsin on Wednesday, April 26 for a 7:00 p.m. contest with league-leading Carthage.
