Vikings use balanced scoring and dominance on face-offs to defeat North Central 9-5

win at North Central of Wednesday, April 19.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – A combination of balanced scoring and extra possessions thanks to a dominating performance on face-offs helped propel Augustana to a 9-5 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's lacrosse victory over North Central on Wednesday, April 19 in Naperville, Illinois. The Vikings jumped out to an early lead and then kept the pressure on by winning 12 of 17 face-offs in the game.
 
Sophomore Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) got the visitors off to a good start with a goal at 9;12 of the first period with sophomore Sam Daly (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) picking up an assist. Junior John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) added an unassisted goal less than two minutes later (7:48) to give Augustana a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
 
The game opened up a bit in the second quarter but the Vikings got unassisted goals from sophomore Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), junior Nick Zielinski (Huntley – Ill.  – HS, San Marcos, Calif.) and Whorwell again to grab a 5-2 edge at halftime.
 
The third quarter saw junior Cam MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.)  and senior Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) tally unassisted goals while the Cardinals got one goal from Tommy Huizinga. The score was 7-3 in favor of the Vikings heading into the fourth.
 
After Daly scored his 13th goal of the year off an assist by Danko midway through the stanza (7:13), North Central got goals by Steven Faux and Ethan Hurst to trim the Augustana lead to 8-5 with 2:19 remaining. Hawkins scored with :23 left off a Zielinski assist to account for the final margin.
 
Hawkins and Whorwell each had two goals while Zielinski, Daly, Danko, Borgetti and MacKenzie all tallied once.
 
The Vikings were out-shot 30-27 by the Cardinals and the ground ball battle was narrowly won by Augustana 26-25.
 
It was on face-offs where the Vikings had the decided advantage as they won 12 of 17 with junior McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) accounting for all of those. That gave Augustana a decided advantage in possession time.
 
Freshman Matthew Jarzynski (Detroit Catholic Central HS, Northville, Mich.) led the team in ground balls with six.
 
Junior Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) got the call in the nets and he responded with 19 saves, including seven in the fourth and final period.
 
Augustana is now 6-8 overall and 2-1 in the CCIW while North Central fell to 9-3 and 1-2. The Vikings of head coach Dan Torie will play Carroll on Saturday, April 22 in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
