BELOIT, Wis. – Sophomore
Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) scored five goals and classmate
Jeremiah Heredia (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) recorded 17 saves in goal Saturday to lead Augustana to a 12-10 win at Beloit. Coach
Dan Torie's Vikings improved to 4-6 on the season, while the host Buccaneers dropped to 5-3.
Augustana got on the board first when junior
Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) scored an unassisted goal at the 12:41 mark of the first quarter. Sophomore
Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) added a goal with an assist from senior
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) a minute later to make it 2-0.
After Matt Kelley's goal drew Beloit to within 2-1, Hawkins—returning after an injury cost him eight games—and Borgetti scored to put the Vikings up 4-0.
Beloit's Nick Meiseberger scored the last goal of the first quarter and the first goal of the second to cut the deficit 4-3. Buccaneers Zach Carner and Luke Bankford sandwiched scores around one by Borgetti (assisted by Hawkins) to send the teams to halftime tied 5-5.
Kelly's goal at 13:25 of the third quarter gave the hosts their first lead. Gallo and Beloit's Mike Spencer traded goals before Borgetti tallied two in a row for an 8-7 Augustana advantage. Mark Gannon's tally forged one final tie for the Buccaneers, but sophomore
Brian Hinsberger (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) put the Vikings back on top and consecutive
Cameron MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles Ill.) goals added a little breathing room. Carner scored with 30 seconds left to pull Beloit to within 11-9 after three quarters.
Midway through the fourth period, Mike Spencer scored for the Buccaneers to make it a one-goal game, but Heredia and the Augustana defense shut down Beloit the rest of the way. Borgetti added an insurance goal with nine seconds left and fittingly, Heredia made a save as the final horn sounded—his eighth of the period and fifth in the last 6:16 of the game.
The hosts held a 50-38 advantage in shots and grabbed 38 ground balls to 24 for the Vikings. The Buccaneers also won 14 of 23 faceoffs and committed 23 turnovers to 29 for Augustana.
Torie's club is back in action on Wednesday, April 5, hosting Dubuque in a CCIW contest scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Thorson-Lucken Field.
