ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Sophomores Jeremiah Heredia (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) and Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) led the way Wednesday, as Augustana defeated Benedictine 3-2 at Thorson-Lucken Field. Heredia shut the Eagles out for nearly 44 minutes and finished with 15 saves and Borgetti scored all three Viking goals without the benefit of an assist. Coach Dan Torie's club improved to 2-4 on the season. Benedictine dropped to 2-3.

Heredia recorded eight saves in a scoreless first half. His counterpart in goal, Sammie Sanko, stopped two shots as Augustana had trouble mounting an offensive attack.

Both offenses picked it up in the third quarter, although the teams went nearly 14 minutes before scoring. Heredia had six saves in the period and Sanko four. With 1:06 left, Benedictine's Randy Patrick finally found the back of the net. His goal, assisted by Kyle Wagner, put the Eagles on top 1-0. Less than a minute later, Borgetti went low to beat Sanko with the equalizer and the teams went to the fourth tied 1-1.

Borgetti scored twice more, with 8:39 and 4:13 to play, to give the Vikings a 3-1 advantage. With 1:37 left, Wagner again assisted on a Patrick goal to pull the visitors within one. Benedictine won the ensuing faceoff, but freshman Matthew Jarzynski (Northville HS, Northville, Mich.) forced a turnover with just under a minute to play and Augustana was able to run out the clock for the win.

The Eagles had advantages of 34-29 in shots and 34-19 in ground balls. The teams split eight faceoffs.  The Vikings committed 18 turnovers to 15 for Benedictine.

In addition to his 15 saves, Heredia also shared the team high in ground balls with senior Luke Burrow (Noblesville HS, Noblesville, Ind.). Each had three. Sanko finished with nine saves for the Eagles.

Augustana is back in action on Saturday, March 10, traveling to Olivet, Michigan to face the Olivet Comets at noon EST.
