Second half lapse costs Vikings in loss to Wittenberg

tied the game at 4-4 in the first half on Sunday
against Wittenberg.

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – A scoring draught in the first 11 minutes of the second half cost Augustana dearly in a 15-9 loss to Wittenberg on Sunday, March 26 in a game played in Greencastle, Indiana. The Vikings trailed just 8-7 at halftime but gave up four straight goals over the first 11 minutes of the second half and were never able to recover.
 
The first half was even throughout as the score was tied four occasions although Augustana never was able to grab the lead.
 
Wittenberg got on the board first with a goal just 1:15 into the game by Emily Wadds but the Vikings evened things at 27:41 when senior Anne Hopkins (Mother Mcauley HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored off an Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) feed.
 
Two goals by the Tigers Victoria Zysik made it 3-1 in favor of the team that was designated as the home team in this neutral site contest. Sophomore Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) scored at 17:07 to trim the margin to 3-2. After Wittenberg scored to make it 4-2, it was sophomore Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) scoring at 13:51 to make it 4-3 and sophomore Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) tallied at 10:45 to tie things at 4-4.
 
Mayer scored twice for Augustana heading down the stretch in the first half and with just two seconds left on the clock Hopkins scored off a Mayer assist to make the score 8-7 at halftime in favor of the Tigers.
 
Wittenberg then scored the first four goals of the second half to go in front 12-7 until Hopkins broke the ice with a free position goal at 18:26 to make it 12-8. The Tigers then scored three straight to build the lead to 15-8 before Mayer scored a goal off an assist from Hopkins with 2:38 left to account for the final score of 15-9.
 
Hopkins had three assists, two saves and four ground balls while Mayer picked up three goals, two assists, five ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
 
The Vikings were outshot 28-14 and lost the ground ball battle 30-22. Wittenberg also held a 17-8 advantage in draw controls.
 
Wittenberg got five goals each from Victoria Zysik and Becca Joseph.
 
Augustana is now 3-5 on the season while Wittenberg moves to 7-3. The Vikings will be in action again on April 8 at home against Illinois Wesleyan in the College Conference of Illinois Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. at Thorson-Lucken Field.
