versus Rockford, including three in Augustana's 7-6. 10-inning
win in game two.
MOLINE, Ill. – Junior
Matt Loeffl (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) drew a two-out walk in the 10th inning of game two with Rockford Sunday and came around to score the winning run on an error, salvaging a doubleheader split for Augustana. The Vikings rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win the nightcap 7-6. The Regents won the twin bill opener 2-0. Coach
Greg Wallace's club, ranked 16th in the nation, is now 14-2 on the year. Rockford moved to 6-7 on the season.
ROCKFORD 2, AUGUSTANA 0
Regent starter David Camacho handcuffed Augustana on five hits to win the opener 2-0.
Camacho's teammates gave him the only runs he would need in the top of the first. Bryce Hinkleman touched Viking starter
Mike Powers (Benet Academy, Westmont, Ill.) for a leadoff single. After retiring the next two batters, Powers hit Chris Carlson and walked Austin Smith. Patrick O'Malley followed with a single down the right field line, scoring Hinkleman and Carlson with the game's only two runs.
Sophomore
Nick Mosele (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) had a leadoff single in the sixth, eventually reaching third, where he was stranded.
Augustana's best threat came in the seventh. Singles by senior
Mitchel Ruh (Hinckley-Big Rock HS, Big Rock, Ill.) and junior
John Moraski (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, Ill.) and an error loaded the bases with no outs, but Camacho coaxed three straight popouts to get out of the inning.
Carter Amundsen (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) had a two-out double in the eighth, but was left stranded at second.
Powers, who suffered his first loss in three decisions, followed up the first with six shutout innings before leaving in favor of
Nick Refka (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) at the start of the eighth. Powers allowed eight hits, walked one and fanned five. Moraski had two of the Vikings' five hits.
AUGUSTANA 7, ROCKFORD 6 (10)
Augustana found itself down 6-0 after two and a half innings of the nightcap. Michael Tosado had the big hit in a four-run Regent first. Rockford added a run off Viking starter
Connor Berek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) in the second and an unearned run off freshman reliever
Chris Refka (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) in the third.
Augustana's rally started with a three-run sixth. Sophomore
Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) had a leadoff single and got the Vikings on the board when Moraski singled him in. Amundsen scored on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk to Loeffl forced in Moraski to make it 6-3.
Junior
Tyler Nunez (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) scored on a double play grounder in the seventh and the Vikings tied it with two runs in the ninth. Nunez drew a leadoff walk and scored on an Amundsen double. After a passed ball moved Amundsen to third, Ruh plated him with a sacrifice fly to center.
Wallace's crew won it on Loeffl's run in the 10th.
The Augustana bullpen allowed just one unearned run in 8 2/3 innings. Refka went 5 2/3, junior
Mitch Malone (Minooka HS, Minooka, Ill.) a third and senior
Casey Weir (Warren HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) the final 2 2/3. Weir fanned five in his stint and earned the win to go to 3-0 on the year.
Amundsen finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one knocked in. Kairis had two hits and Nunez scored twice.
