Slow start hurts Vikings in 13-5 loss to Albion

Sophomore Adam Borgetti scored three goals Saturday, but Augustana
dropped a 13-5 decision to Albion at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Albion jumped in front 7-0 after the first quarter Saturday and cruised to a 13-5 win over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings fell to 3-6 on the year, while the Britons improved to 6-2.
 
Harrison Palmer and Zach Hubbell each scored two of Albion's seven first-period goals. Hubbell's second came on a man advantage. Drew Harm's second goal of the day made it 8-0 just 14 seconds into the second period.
 
With 9:28 to play before halftime, sophomore Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) got Augustana on the board with his sixth goal of the season. Jacob Swift and Kyle DeCamp answered with goals for the Britons before two more Borgetti tallies, the second with the Vikings a man up, made it 10-3 at halftime.
 
Harrison Palmer and junior Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) traded goals to make it 11-4 Albion after three.
 
Alec Palmer scored off a Matt Lowes assist with Albion a man down at the 9:46 mark of the fourth quarter. Sophomore Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) answered for Augustana 29 seconds later and Brandon Lebioda finished off the day's scoring with a goal for the Britons with 7:47 to play.
 
The visitors outshot the Vikings by a 43-30 margin and collected 35 ground balls to 20 for Augustana. Albion won 16 of 21 faceoffs and committed 15 turnovers to 20 for the hosts.
 
Borgetti finished with three goals to lead the Viking attack. Sophomore Sam Daly (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) led with three ground balls and classmate Matt Balara (St. Charles North HS, Elburn, Ill.) forced two turnovers. Sophomore Jeremiah Heredia (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) played 39 minutes in goal and recorded five saves while surrendering 11 goals.
 
On Saturday, April 1, Coach Dan Torie's crew will travel to Beloit to face the Buccaneers in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
