suffered the tough-luck loss in a 2-1, eight-inning setback to St. Mary's.
CLERMONT, Fla. – Augustana dropped a pair of games Sunday at Legends Way Ballfields, losing to St. Mary's 2-1 in eight innings before suffering a 10-2 setback at the hands of Wartburg later in the afternoon. The Vikings, now 0-4 on the season, are back in action on Monday, February 27 against Adrian at 11:30 a.m. and Houghton at 2:00 p.m. EST.
ST. MARY'S 2, AUGUSTANA 1 (8)
Haley Vanourey's eight-inning sacrifice fly scored Brittney Birkhauser with the winning run in St. Mary's 2-1 over Augustana.
The score was tied 1-1 after seven innings. With international tiebreaker rules in effect, each team started its half of the eighth with a runner placed at second base. The Vikings eventually moved runners to second and third with one out in the top of the frame, but the Cardinals cut the lead runner down at the plate for the second out and pitcher Ashley Betzold retired
Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) to end the threat.
In the bottom half, St. Mary's Brittney Birkhauser was placed at second. She was sacrificed to third and tagged and scored the game-winner when Vanourey flew to center.
Kathi Opsahl's RBI single off
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) in the first gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Augustana tied it in the third. Sophomore
Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk and later scored on
Madeline McGuire's
(Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) single to left.
Both Betzold and Viking
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) went the distance in the circle. The Augustana sophomore allowed just four hits and one earned run in her 7 2/3 innings, but fell to 0-2 with the loss.
WARTBURG 10, AUGUSTANA 2
The Vikings led 2-1 after an inning and a half in their second game of the day, but the Knights exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second on their way to a five-inning win.
Wartburg used a walk, hit batter, double steal and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mara Forsyth to take a 1-0 lead against Augustana starter
Marisa Potter (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) in the first.
Augustana answered with a pair in the top of the second. Junior
Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) touched Kimberly Wedeking for a leadoff double and stole third.
Kelsey Heiland's
(Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) single scored Blumberg with the tying run and
Amanda Ebert (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) singled in Heiland two outs later to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
The advantage was short-lived however, as the Knights jumped on Potter for five in the bottom half. A hit batter and two walks loaded the bases with one out and Kailee O'Brien's single tied things at 2-2. Wedeking drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run and Forsyth singled in two more. Taylor Smola singled in battery mate Wedeking with the final run of the inning.
Hannah Onken had an RBI double off Augustana reliever
Danielle Klatt (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) in the fourth and Wartburg shortened the contest to five innings with a three-spot in the fifth. Forsyth and Wedeking each had an RBI single and Wedeking scored the final run as part of a double steal.
Potter (0-1) went two innings and absorbed the loss. Wedeking went the distance for the win. She helped herself by going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two driven in. Forsyth had two hits and four RBI and O'Brien hit safely twice and scored three times.
