Saturday in a 6-1 setback at the hands of Otterbein.
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Otterbein's Craig Prince went 7 2/3 innings and Christian Chiero and Mitch Stotler each had two hits and two RBI Saturday, as the Cardinals handed Augustana its first loss of the year, 6-1 at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. The Vikings fell to 4-1 heading into a contest with Capital on Sunday, February 26. Saturday's game was the season-opener for Otterbein.
Prince and Augustana starter
Kyle McGinley (Mullen HS, Denver, Colo.) matched goose eggs for four innings, although the Vikings left the bags full in the second and two runners stranded in both the third and fourth. They finally broke through for a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth.
Peter Doughty (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) drew a one-out walk and came around to score on
John Moraski's
(Kewanee HS, Kewanee, Ill.) single to right.
The Cardinals answered with two runs in the bottom half. Stotler's two-run single to right delivered Nick Wiseman and Brock Frentz.
McGinley exited after retiring the first batter in the fifth, but Otterbein added an unearned run off junior reliever
Vinny Rotunno (Lakes HS, Lindenhurst, Ill.). Chiero's RBI single to center plated Connor Brett who had walked and moved to third on a Augustana error.
Prince cruised through the sixth and seventh and got the first two outs in the eighth before yielding to reliever Caleb Norton.
The Cardinals extended their lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Chiero drove in one with a single to left and two more came across on another Viking miscue.
Norton set Augustana down in order in the top of the ninth.
Moraski continued his hot hitting with a pair of knocks, but Coach
Greg Wallace's club managed just five hits on the day. The Vikings couldn't take advantage of three walks, two hit batsmen and two Otterbein errors, leaving 10 runners stranded. McGinley allowed three hits and two runs while fanning seven in 5 1/3 innings. He took the tough-luck loss and is 0-1 on the season.
Prince (1-0) surrendered five hits and one run, with three walks and three strikeouts. Norton retired all four batters he faced.
