Vikings fall 25-4 at Colorado College

COLRADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Robbie Stern scored eight goals Thursday to lead Colorado College to a 25-4 win over Augustana at Washburn Field. The loss dropped the Vikings to 1-1 on the season, while the host Tigers improved to 3-0.
 
Stern assisted on Austin Davie's goal put CC on top 1-0 at 10:14 of the first quarter. The two switched roles for the next two scores, which came within a minute. Davie assisted on Stern's first two goals of the game as the Tigers went up 3-0.
 
Nick Zielinski's (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) unassisted goal with 2:42 left in the first, drew Augustana to within 3-1 after one quarter.
 
Colorado College put the contest out of reach with nine unanswered goals in the second period. Stern tallied the first three and added another later in the quarter. Davie and Brad Hale each scored twice as the Tigers took a 12-1 lead to the halftime break.
 
Stern scored the first two goals of the third quarter—his seventh and eighth of the game—and his team led 20-2 going to the final period.
 
Zielinski finished with a pair of goals for the Vikings, while sophomores Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Hayden Holland (Owatonna HS, Owatonna, Minn.) each scored once. Sophomore Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst) was credited with Augustana's lone assist. Holland and junior McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) led Coach Dan Torie's club with four ground balls each. Freshman Matt Jarzynski (Northville HS, Northville, Mich.) and junior Zach Carlson (Shakopee HS, Shakopee, Minn.) caused two turnovers apiece.
 
Torie used three goalies. Sophomore Jeremiah Heredia (Warren HS, Lindenhurst, Ill.) played the first half and made seven saves. Freshman Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and sophomore Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) each recorded three saves in a quarter of action.
 
Colorado College held advantages of 49-12 in shots and 48-23 in ground balls. The Tigers won 25 of 32 faceoffs and committed 19 turnovers to 24 for the Vikings.
