LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Playing without its top two players on its trip to California, Augustana fell to Occidental Tuesday night by a score of 14-0. The setback drops the Vikings to 0-2 on the year, while the host Tigers improved to 3-0.
 
Ciara Byrne scored off a Madisyn Hallare assist to get Occidental on the board with a minute and 45 seconds gone. Sierra Slack scored an unassisted goal at the 24:08 mark and then assisted on Shai Goodman's goal at 21:01 to make it 3-0.
 
Rebecca Reese tallied consecutive goals, including one off a free position attempt, before the Hallare to Byrne combination clicked again with 16:47 before halftime. Goodman's goal with the Tigers a player down at 12:36 made it 7-0 Occidental and that's the way the half would end.
 
Alessandra Pelliccia scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half and added a goal later as well. Slack, Goodman, Reese and Byrne tallied the other Tiger goals.
 
Playing without 2016 CCIW Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year Anne Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.), Augustana was outshot by a margin of 35-5. Occidental controlled 13 of 15 draws. The Vikings committed 14 turnovers to just four for the hosts and the Tigers collected 25 ground balls to Augustana's eight.
 
Junior Analia Fowler (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) went 39-plus minutes in goal for the Vikings and made seven saves while allowing 10 goals. Junior Madalynne Russell (Noblesville HS, Noblesville, Ind.) relieved her and surrendered four goals with four saves.
 
Russell and sophomore Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) each nabbed a pair of ground balls for Augustana and sophomores Carla Bennett (Marina Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) and Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) each controlled a draw.
 
The Vikings are back in action on Thursday, February 23 at Pomona-Pitzer.
