sweep of Brandeis Tuesday in Auburndale, Florida.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Augustana pounded out 15 hits in the opener and scratched across an unearned run in the ninth inning of the nightcap Tuesday to sweep a doubleheader from Brandeis by scores of 11-3 and 5-4. A single game originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 22 was moved up a day because of rain in the forecast. The teams will be idle on Wednesday before completing their four-game series on Thursday, February 23 at noon EST. The Vikings improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Judges fell to 0-3.

AUGUSTANA 11, BRANDEIS 3

Augustana jumped in front 3-0 after two innings and 5-1 after five in game one and rode more solid pitching to the win.

Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) singled on the first pitch of the game, was sacrificed to second by Jack Hallmark (Cherry Creek HS, Englewood, Colo.) and scored on Carter Amundsen's (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) single to center. Hallmark's two-run single in the second made it 3-0 Vikings.

Brandeis touched senior Zach Morgenstern (Peoria Notre Dame HS, East Peoria, Ill.) for an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, but Augustana answered with a pair in the fifth. Senior Mitchel Ruh (Hinckley-Big Rock HS, Big Rock, Ill.) had an RBI double to right-center and later scored on a wild pitch.

Morgenstern's day ended after six innings. He allowed just two hits and two runs (one earned) while walking three and fanning 11. He earned the win to go to 1-0 on the year. Junior Vinny Rotunno (Lakes HS, Lindenhurst, Ill.) gave up an unearned run in two hitless innings and senior Nick Refka (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) finished things out with a scoreless ninth.

The Vikings tacked on six runs in their final two at-bats. Kairis singled in a run in the eighth and knocked in two more with a triple to right in the ninth. He, Hallmark and junior John Moraski (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, Ill.) each had three hits for Coach Greg Wallace's club.

AUGUSTANA 5, BRANDEIS 4

In the nightcap, Hallmark tallied the winning run on a Judges' error in the bottom of the ninth. After being hit by a Daniel Schupper pitch with two outs, Hallmark stole second and came around to score one batter later when Brandeis couldn't handle a ball off the bat of Peter Doughty (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.).

Hallmark's run made a winner of sophomore Mike Powers (Benet Academy, Westmont, Ill.) (1-0), who threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Brad Dubow (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.).

Augustana led 3-0 after five. Doubles by Kairis and Amundsen plated a run in the third and junior Tyler Nunez (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) doubled in two more in the fourth.

Dubow cruised through five innings, allowing just two Brandeis singles. However, after fanning the first batter in the sixth, he ran into trouble. Jay Schaff's single, a walk and Marvis Gomez's infield hit produce the Judges' first run. Ryan Tettemer singled in another and after Powers came on, Ryan Lussier knocked in two more to give Brandeis a 4-3 lead after five and a half.

Junior John Sagen (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) singled in Moraski with the tying run in the bottom of the sixth before Powers and Judge reliever Anthony Nomakeo matched consecutive scoreless innings. Powers also set Brandeis down in the top of the ninth.

Moraksi had two hits and scored twice and Nunez drove in a pair. Powers allowed hits to the first two batters he faced in the sixth, but none the rest of the way. He fanned five to match Dubow's total.
