ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Sophomores Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) led the way offensively Sunday, as Augustana opened the 2017 season with a 16-9 victory over Cornell at Thorson-Lucken Field. Whorwell had a game-high four goals and Borgetti game highs of five assists and seven points, while Gallo chipped in with three goals.

The Borgetti-to-Gallo combination worked early for Coach Dan Torie's squad, teaming up for the Vikings' first two goals. They were sandwiched around an unassisted tally by the Rams' Michael Paquette. Carlos Siguenza's unassisted goal late in the first quarter pulled the visitors even a 2-2 after one period.

In the first minute of the second quarter, Cornell was called for concurrent penalties, resulting in a two-man Augustana advantage. With the Vikings on the attack, Ram Jacob Norris forced a turnover which resulted in a rare two-man-down transition goal for A.J. Fisher and Cornell's only lead of the afternoon.

Augustana responded quickly. Borgetti fed senior Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) for the equalizer 50 seconds later and then put the Vikings up 4-3 with an unassisted goal at 11:19 of the second quarter. Augustana's Sam Daly (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) and Ram Evan Bush traded goals before Whorwell and Borgetti scored to give the hosts a 7-4 lead at intermission.

Whorwell opened and closed the third quarter with goals. Daly and senior Luke Burrow (Noblesville HS, Noblesville, Ill.) also scored and the Vikings led 11-6 going to the final period.

Goals by Hawkins, sophomore Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Whorwell to open the fourth quarter extended the advantage to 14-6, the largest of the afternoon. Tallies by junior Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) and Gallo in the final four minutes accounted for the final.

Borgetti finished with two goals and five assists. Whorwell had four goals and an assist and Gallo scored three times and dished out one helper. Sophomore Jeremiah Heredia (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) went the distance in goal in his first collegiate start and recorded 16 saves. Junior McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) snared a game-high seven ground balls and Whorwell and Zielinski shared game high honors with four caused turnovers apiece.

Next up for Torie's club is a trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where the Vikings will face Colorado College on Thursday, February 23.
