ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – An impressive first quarter helped lead Augustana to an 85-71 non-conference women's basketball victory over Dubuque on Wednesday, December 13 in the Carver Center. The Vikings bolted to a 12-2 lead before the game was three minutes old and led 29-11 after the first quarter.
At halftime the margin was 50-26 and head coach
Mark Beinborn's team was on its way to its sixth win of the season against just two defeats.
All five starters scored before the game was four minutes old and Augustana led 14-4 after a basket by senior
Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) with 6:39 left in the first stanza. The lead kept growing as senior Meghan Stovall
(Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) nailed a three point field goal, sophomore Alexis Jones
(Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored a basket and junior Izzy Anderson
(Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) drilled a pair of baskets and with 4:05 left the margin ballooned to 23-4.
The lead eventually grew to 26 points in the second quarter after a three point field goal from Stovall with 5:09 remaining made it 40-14.
Dubuque made a charge in the second half and with 2:33 left in the fourth quarter a conventional three-point play by Cece Pope trimmed the lead to 77-69. That capped a 43-27 run by the Spartans. However, a three point field goal by Augustana's Scooter Lopez
(Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) with 2:12 left pushed things back to 11 points (80-69) to help seal the victory.
The Vikings shot .500 (16-32) from the floor in the first half en route to their big lead, including making five of 11 three point field goals.
Anderson led Augustana in scoring with 23 points and she had seven assists, two steals and two rebounds while Stovall had 17 points with four assists and a blocked shot. Jones came through with a double-double with 12 pints and a game-high 12 rebounds while also contributing two assists and four steals. Lopez scored 11 points and had four assists with two steals and two rebounds.
The Viking defense held the Spartans to .388 (26-67) from the floor and Augustana held a 42-37 rebounding margin. Abbey Meyer led Dubuque in scoring with 16 points.
Augustana, now 6-2 on the season, will travel to McMinnville, Oregon on December 16 for a game against Linfield and on December 18 the Vikings will play George Fox in Newberg, Oregon. Dubuque is 2-7 on the season.
