Coach
Scott Mejia's Augustana soccer team completed the 2017 season with an overall record of 8-8-1 and a CCIW mark of 3-4-1. Individual honors went to sophomore back
Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), who earned first team All-CCIW and third team United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region recognition, and senior midfielder
Mady Huber (Legacy HS, Broomfield, Colo.), who was a second team All-CCIW selection.
The Vikings opened the season with six straight matches on the road. They defeated Bethel 1-0 and Wisconsin Lutheran 6-1 before dropping four straight. Included in that streak were setbacks to ninth-ranked Thomas More, a UW-La Crosse outfit that finished 20-2-3 and was a national quarterfinalist and a Loras side that went 15-2-3 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Mejia's squad bounced back to win five in a row, including CCIW wins over Elmhurst and North Park. Augustana sandwich losses to North Central and eventual league champ Wheaton around a scoreless tie with Carroll before downing Millikin 1-0 on Senior Day at Thorson-Lucken Field.
The Vikings closed out the season by falling 3-0 at Illinois Wesleyan and dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker at Carthage. The setback to the Lady Reds, which came on a goal in the final minute, cost the team a berth in the CCIW Tournament.
Juniors
Karleen Gomez (Grayslake Central HS, Hainesville, Ill.) and
Andria Serra (Alleman HS, Silvis, Ill.) shared the team lead in goals (four) and points (10) this year. With two each, the pair also shared the team assist lead with seniors
Grace Iaquinta (Lincoln East HS, Lincoln, Neb.) and Huber, junior
Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.) and freshmen
Jenna Dvorak (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and
Karissa Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.).
Freshman
Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) and senior
Bailey Bradford (Deerfield HS, Riverwoods, Ill.) shared time in goal. Ion logged 1,023 minutes and finished 3-7-1 with a 1.41 goals against average and a save percentage of .795. Bradford was 5-1 in 546 minutes with an .864 save percentage and a GAA of 0.99.
Senior
Sammi Farkos (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.), junior
Abby Wendell (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomores Fank and
Hannah Rossi (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) were stalwarts on Mejia's back line this year.
