WHITEWATER , Wis. – UW-Whitewater bolted to an 11-0 lead right out of the gate Thursday night and went on to defeat Augustana 82-65 at Kachel Gymnasium. The 14th-ranked Warhawks improved to 5-0 on the year, while Coach Mark Beinborn's Vikings suffered their first loss in five outings.

Brooke Trewyn scored five points as the hosts jumped in front 11-0 two and a half minutes in. Junior Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) scored Augustana's first eight points and the Vikings trailed 13-8 midway through the first period. Roberts' ninth point pulled the visitors to within 16-11, but Malia Smith answered with a three-pointer and Becky Deichl beat the buzzer with a putback that gave Whitewater a 22-13 lead after one quarter.

Roberts had Augustana's first bucket of the second period as well and when classmate Izzy Anderson (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) scored in the lane with 5:56 left, the Vikings were down just six (25-19). However, Sarah Schumacher hit a deuce and a trey to spark a 19-6 Warhawk run that gave them a 44-27 lead at the break.

The margin climbed over 20 (48-27) on a Camri Conley layup at the 9:26 mark of the third quarter. Becky Raeder's layup with two and a half minutes left in the period pushed it to 64-40 before Anderson converted a conventional three-point play and added four free throws to cut the deficit to 64-47 after three.

A pair of Trewyn free throws gave Whitewater its biggest lead of the night at 76-50 just before the midway point of the fourth. Anderson had a pair of field goals and Augustana freshman Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) scored the game's last four points to account for the 82-65 final.

Anderson led four Vikings in double figures with 16 points. Roberts added 14, along with a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) tallied a dozen and Edell scored 10 and had a game-high six steals.

Trewyn led the Warhawks with game highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Deichl added 18 and eight, respectively. Trewyn also dished out a game-high six assists.

Augustana shot just .321 (18-56) from the field and missed all 12 of its three-point attempts. The Vikings converted 29 of 39 (.744) free throws on the night. UWW connected on 32 of 65 (.492) field goal tries, including five of 17 (.294) from beyond the arc. The hosts were 13 of 19 (.684) from the foul line and won the battle of the boards 48-30. Augustana committed 15 turnovers and forced 20 by the Warhawks.

Beinborn's outfit opens CCIW play on Wednesday, December 6, when the Vikings travel to Elmhurst to face the Bluejays. Tipoff at R. A. Faganel Hall is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
