Augustana finishes 2-12-2 overall and 1-7 in the CCIW; Matt Allen named Vikings' Player of the Year

The Augustana men's soccer team finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 2-12-2 and a mark of 1-7 in the CCIW. Sophomore Matthew Allen (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) earned Player of the Year honors for the Vikings.

Coach Mick Regan's squad dropped its first four matches of the season on the road. Augustana fell 2-1 to Knox in its home opener on September 16, but came back eight days later to play to a 2-2 draw with undefeated Simpson at Thorson-Lucken Field.

After a tough 3-2 overtime setback at home to Elmhurst, the Vikings went on the road and recorded their first win, 1-0 at Coe on a goal by sophomore Daniel Artman (Schaumburg HS, Hanover Park, Ill.). Augustana achieved a scoreless tie at Wisconsin-Whitewater on October 4 to maintain possession of the Viking-Warhawk Cup, but dropped its next four matches.

On October 21, the Vikings celebrated Senior Day at Thorson-Lucken Field with a 2-1 overtime win over Millikin. Freshman Chris Plantz (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.) tallied the game winner in the eighth minute of overtime. Augustana closed the season with losses at Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage.

Allen was the Vikings' scoring leader this year with three goals and seven points. Senior Grant Bracken (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) led the team with two assists.

Sophomore Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) played 1,293 minutes in goal and finished 2-10-2 with a .759 save percentage and a goals against average of 1.95. He led the CCIW with 49 saves and his 88 total saves this year are sixth-most in program history. His average of 6.29 per match is third-best in a season at Augustana and he was selected as the team's Most Improved Player.

Senior Victor Velazquez (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.) anchored the Viking defense in front of Klaber, along with Bracken, junior Jack McKearnan (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.), sophomore Tyler Duggan (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Ill.) and freshman Sander Soerhaug (Vardafjell VGS, Haugesund, Norway)—Augustana's Newcomer of the Year.
