ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Coach Mark Beinborn's Augustana basketball team jumped out in front 20-4 Saturday afternoon and rolled to an 80-71 win over Coe in its 2017-18 home opener at Carver Center. The Vikings improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the visiting Kohawks dropped to 1-1.

Junior Izzy Anderson (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had four field goals in Augustana's opening salvo that resulted in a 20-4 lead at the two-minute mark of the first quarter. The burst was fueled by eight Coe turnovers, half of which came on Viking steals. Sophomore Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored with 30 seconds left to give the hosts a 26-8 lead after one period.

Jenna Lehman scored eight points in the first four minutes of the second quarter, as the Kohawks chipped away at the deficit. Her three-pointer at the 6:18 mark drew Coe to within eight at 28-20. However, Augustana closed the half on a 12-5 run. Scooter Lopez's (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scoop shot from the right side of the lane beat the halftime buzzer and gave Augustana a 40-25 lead at the break.

Jones led the Vikings with nine first-half points and Lopez finished the half with eight points and four steals.

Junior Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) tallied the first bucket of the second half to extend the lead to 42-25 and Augustana still led by 17 after a Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) basket with 5:06 left in the third quarter. However, Lehman, Sydney Schroder and Karlee Grabau each scored four points as Coe closed the period on a 12-6 run to trail 58-47 after three.

Early in the fourth quarter, Junior Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) sandwiched a deuce and a trey around a basket by freshman Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and the Viking lead was back to 18 (65-47) for the first time since early in the second period. Lehman scored six points as the Kohawks eventually pulled as close as 74-67 with 1:56 remaining, but Anderson hit a jumper late in the shot clock and she and Edell each hit two free throws in the final 40 seconds to ice the win.

Edell led Augustana with 15 points and added three steals in 20 minutes off the bench. Anderson finished with 14 points and Allen and Kramer 10 each. Allen also led the Vikings with seven rebounds. Jones had four assists to go along with nine points and Lopez finished with a game-high five steals.

Lehman, who tallied her 1,000th career point, finished with game highs of 23 points and nine rebounds.

Beinborn's club shot .478 from the field on 32 of 67. The Vikings hit just three of 15 (.200) three-point tries but converted 13 of 17 (.765) from the free throw line. Coe was 25 of 51 (.490) from the floor, eight of 21 (.381) from beyond the arc and 13 of 16 (.813) from the foul line. Augustana won the battle of the boards 33-32 and forced 24 Kohawk turnovers (with 12 steals), while committing just 12.

The Vikings are back at Carver Center on Tuesday, November 21, hosting Benedictine in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
