Freshman Chris Plantz took two of Augustana's three shots in a 3-0
setback at Carthage Saturday.
KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage scored all of its goals in the second half Saturday on its way to a 3-0 win over Augustana in the sides' CCIW finale at Art Keller Field. The Red Men improved to 12-6-2 on the season and 5-2-1 in the conference, while the Vikings fell to 2-12-2 overall and 1-7 in the league.
Chris Plantz (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.) took both of Augustana's shots in a scoreless first half. The freshman put each on frame, but Carthage keeper Niko Mavrogiannis turned both away. Viking keeper
Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) recorded four saves in the period. The hosts held a 5-2 advantage in shots at intermission.
The Red Men turned up the heat in the second half, outshooting their guests by an 18-1 margin. They got on the board in the 52nd minute, when Nicholas Messineo scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Jamie Tausend.
In minute 73, Tausend made it 2-0 when he scored on a penalty kick. The goal was his second of the season.
Four minutes later, Jorge Triana accounted for the final with his third goal of the season. Luke Schoffstall was credited with the assist on the play.
Carthage finished with a 23-3 edge in shots, including 12-2 in shots on goal. The Red Men took eight corners in the match to one for Augustana and the Vikings were whistled for 12 fouls to three for the hosts.
Klaber finished with nine saves and Mavrogiannis two.
The Vikings will close out the regular season on Tuesday, October 31, hosting Wisconsin-Platteville at Thorson-Lucken Field. That match, scheduled for 7:00 p.m., is the make-up of a September 20 meeting that was postponed due to thunderstorms.
