Augustana drops 2-0 decision at Illinois Wesleyan

Senior Victor Velzquez and the Augustana defense kept Illinois
Wesleyan off the board for more than 82 minutes Wednesday, but
two late goals lifted the hosts to a 2-0 win in Bloomington, Illinois.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan scored twice in the final eight minutes Wednesday night to hand Augustana 2-0 defeat at Neis Soccer Field. The Titans improved to 10-5-1 on the season and 5-2 in the CCIW, while the Vikings fell to 2-11-2 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
 
The two goalkeepers—Augustana sophomore Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Alex Ruckstaetter of Illinois Wesleyan—recorded six and five saves, respectively, in keeping the match scoreless for more than 82 minutes.
 
In minute 83 however, the hosts finally grabbed the lead on Patrick Hickey's fifth goal of the year. Josh Essary was credited with the assist on the play.
 
The Titans added an insurance goal in the 88th minute. Hickey hit James Keegan, who got loose on a breakaway and beat Klaber one-on-one. The goal was Keegan's fifth of the year, with Hickey getting the assist. Ruckstaetter turned away a shot by Viking senior Victor Velazquez (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.) just seconds later to preserve the shutout.
 
For the match, IWU outshot Augustana 18-8 and put 10 attempts on frame to six for the visitors. The Titans held a 5-4 advantage in corners as well.
 
Klaber recorded seven saves on the night, while Ruckstaetter had six.
 
Next up for Coach Mick Regan's Vikings is a trip to Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, October 28 to face Carthage at 7:30 p.m.
