Wheaton went on to defeat the Vikings 1-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Wheaton rode an early goal and some stout defense to a 1-0 win over Augustana Wednesday at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings fell to 7-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the CCIW, while the Thunder improved to 8-4-3 on the season and 5-0-1 in the league.

Two of Augustana's three shots in the match came in the first 10 minutes. The Vikings' best opportunity came in the 10th minute, when junior Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.) got off a header at point-blank range. However, Wheaton keeper Kathryn McGregor was there for the save and it would be 80 minutes before the hosts would get off another shot.

Barely a minute after Sundberg's near miss, Wheaton countered with the only goal of the night. Morgan Whitman used some fancy dribbling along the left side to free herself and lofted a cross that found Madison Peebles on the back side. Peebles' header found the back of the net and the visitors led 1-0.

Augustana keeper Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) recorded three saves in the first half to keep the deficit at one goal.

Viking defenders Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), Sammi Farkos (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill), Hannah Rossi (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and Abby Wendell (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) did a nice job of denying the Thunder prime scoring chances in the second half, but Augustana struggled to mount an attack on offense.

The Vikings' final shot of the night came in the last minute, when a Grace Iaquinta (Lincoln East HS, Lincoln, Ill.) blast from 30 yards out sailed high.

The final shot totals read 20-3 in favor of Wheaton, with the Thunder putting eight on goal to one for Augustana. The visitors took six corners to two for the Vikings.

Ion finished with seven saves and McGregor one.

Coach Scott Mejia's squad will be back at Thorson-Lucken on Saturday, October 21. Augustana hosts Millikin on Senior Day, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
