Senior captain Grant Bracken and the Vikings dropped a 3-0 decision
to Carroll Sunday at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. –Carroll defeated Augustana 3-0 Sunday on a cold, windy afternoon at Thorson-Lucken Field. The visiting Pioneers improved to 3-10-1 on the season and 1-3 in the CCIW, while the setback left the Vikings at 1-9-2 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Augustana got off the first two shots of the match—one by senior Victor Velazquez (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.) in the 20th minute that went high and one by sophomore Michael Peters (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) that was turned away by keeper Nick Drew in the 21st.

In minute 26, McCrystal scored his first goal of the year on Carroll's first shot of the match to make it 1-0 Pioneers. Shea Connell assisted on the play.

Drew made the save on a Sander Soerhaug (Vardafjell VGS, Haugesund, Norway) shot in the 28th minute and Viking sophomore Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) recorded a save on an Austin Schulze attempt in the 42nd to keep the score 1-0 at the break.

One of Augustana's better opportunities came in the 60th minute when senior Grant Bracken (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) had a nearly point-blank look in front of the Carroll goal. However, a Pioneer defender was able to kick the ball out of the goal mouth to keep the Vikings off the board.

After a foul in the 84th minute which earned Soerhaug a red card, Carroll created some breathing room with another tally. Chad Peterson's free kick deflected off the Augustana wall and was headed off the crossbar and in by Matt Quint. The goal was Quint's second of the season.

In the 87th minute, the visitors got some more insurance. Off a counter, Andy Golden's cross from the right side found Peanut Taylor, who beat Klaber for his third goal of the season, making it 3-0.

For the match, Carroll held a 12-9 advantage in shots and put eight on frame to four for the Vikings. The hosts took eight corners to two for the Pioneers and Carroll was called for 18 fouls to Augustana's 11.

Klaber finished with five saves, while Drew recorded four.

Coach Mick Regan's bunch is back in action on Wednesday, October 18, hosting Wheaton in the back half of a women's/men's doubleheader at Thorson-Lucken. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
