Viking win streak snapped at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Augustana had its five-match winning streak snapped Tuesday night, as North Central defeated the Vikings 1-0 at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. Coach Scott Mejia's squad dropped to 7-5 on the season and 2-1 in the CCIW, while the host Cardinals improved to 7-5-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
 
Augustana's best scoring opportunity came at 0-0 in the 62nd minute. After a foul, the Vikings were awarded a penalty kick, but Mady Huber's (Legacy HS, Broomfield, Colo.) shot was no good. North Central keeper Gretchen Frantz was credited with a save on the play.
 
The hosts took the lead in the 78th minute when Anna Brodjian scored her seventh goal of the season. The tally came without the benefit of an assist and put the Cardinals up 1-0.
 
Frantz turned away shots by junior Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.) in the 86th minute and senior Grace Iaquinta (Lincoln East HS, Lincoln, Neb.) in minute 89 to preserve the shutout.
 
Both Frantz and Augustana freshman Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) recorded three saves in a scoreless opening half.
 
For the match, North Central outshot the Vikings 14-9. Each side put seven attempts on frame. Augustana took seven corners—including six in the first half—to six for the Cardinals. The hosts were called for nine fouls to three for Mejia's squad.
 
Ion finished with six saves and Frantz seven. Sundberg and freshman Jenna Dvorak (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) were the most active Vikings offensively. Each got off three shots and put two on goal.
 
Augustana will attempt to start a new winning streak on Saturday, October 14. The Vikings host Carroll at Thorson-Lucken Field at 5:00 p.m. as part of Homecoming festivities.
