PELLA, Iowa – Lightning-quick starts to each half by Central spelled the difference Wednesday as Augustana suffered a 7-1 setback at the hands of the Dutch at the Kuyper Athletics Complex. Miguel Pina and Ian Meentemeyer each recorded a hat trick for Central. The hosts improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Vikings fell to 0-3.
Pina and Meentemeyer each scored in the match's first five minutes to put the Dutch on top 2-0. Another Pina goal in the 19th minute gave his team a 3-0 advantage that it would take to the halftime break. Zach Butters was credited with assists on Meentemeyer's goal and Pina's second tally.
Central added three more goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Meentemeyer scored 36 seconds into the period and Pina completed his hat trick five minutes later. In the 57th minute, a Kiel Pederson assist led to Meentemeyer's third goal of the match.
Bryce Leonard tacked on the Dutch's final goal in the 89th minute.
Augustana junior
Aaron Jones (Woodstock North HS, Wonder Lake, Ill.) scored in the final minute to avert the shutout.
The Dutch finished with a 13-12 advantage in shots and put 10 on frame, to seven for the Vikings. Central also had a 4-0 edge in corners. Fouls were even at 10.
Augustana is back in action on Saturday, September 10, hosting Lakeland in their 2016 home opener at Thorson-Lucken Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
