Wednesday, but Augustana dropped a 2-1 decision at Elmhurst.

ELMHURST, Ill. – Elmhurst parlayed a pair of set piece opportunities into goals Wednesday night and went on to defeat Augustana 2-1 at Langhorst Field. The match was the CCIW opener for both teams, with the Bluejays improving to 8-1 overall and the Vikings dropping to 5-4.

Augustana appeared to have the better of it early, outshooting its hosts 7-3 in the first 36 minutes with a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. However, it was Elmhurst that got on the board first. Following a foul on the Vikings in the 38th minute, Allie Kightly put her free kick inside the far post to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.

Elmhurst extended the advantage to 2-0 in the final minute of the first half. Megan Mrazek headed in a Kim Stanczak corner for her first goal of the season.

Augustana upped the pressure early in the second half, getting off seven shots in the first 17 minutes of the period. Only two of those were on frame, however, and Bluejay keeper Emily Gordon stopped them both.

In the 66th minute, the Vikings used a set piece of their own to cut the deficit in half. Senior Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) headed in a corner from classmate Brianne Frys (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) to make it 2-1. The goal was Lohmeier's third of the season, while Frys recorded her fourth assist. Each of those figures leads the team.

Augustana got off five more shots the rest of the way, but Gordon stopped all three that the Vikings put on frame to preserve the win for Elmhurst.

Augustana outshot the Bluejays 21-9 in the match, including 14-4 in the second half. The Vikings put nine attempts on goal to seven for the hosts. Gordon was credited with eight saves, while Augustana keeper Bailey Bradford (Deerfield HS, Riverwoods, Ill.) made five. The visitors also had a 6-1 advantage in corners.

Coach Scott Mejia's club will host Wisconsin Lutheran at Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday, October 1 as part of Homecoming activities. That match is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
