Senior Rahul Bhatia recorded his third assist of the season in Augustana's
1-1 CCIW-opening tie at Elmhurst Wednesday.
ELMHURST, Ill. –Sam Johnson scored in the 89th minute Wednesday to lift Elmhurst into a 1-1 tie with Augustana in the teams' CCIW opener at rainy Langhorst Field. After two overtime periods, the sides were still level and each team starts the conference season at 0-0-1. For the year, the Vikings are 3-5-1, while the Bluejays move to 5-2-3.
Augustana outshot its hosts 7-3 in the first half. Senior
Michael Brazinski (Plainfield East HS, Plainfield, Ill.) put the Vikings on top in the 36th minute with his team-leading eighth goal of the season. He took a cross from classmate
Rahul Bhatia (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and slipped it inside the near post. The assist was Bhatia's third of the season, tying him with Brazinski for the team lead.
The intensity picked up in the second half, with each team issued three cautions. In addition, Elmhurst lost Andrew Hicks to a red card in the 63rd minute and Augustana's
Shonari Phillips (Tindley HS, Indianapolis, Ind.) suffered the same fate in the 80th minute.
Phillips' ejection sparked the Bluejays, who got off seven shots in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Only two were put on frame, but with less than two minutes remaining, Sam Johnson headed in a cross from Lucas Wetherby Johnson for the equalizer.
Neither team got a shot off in the first overtime. Elmhurst took five in the second extra session, but just one was put on goal, with Viking keeper
Corey Mankins (Marysville HS, Marysville, Ohio) making the save on Didrik Cooper-Seip in the 106th minute.
The Bluejays ended up with a 24-14 edge in shots and a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal. Mankins made eight saves and his Elmhurst counterpart, Nick King, had seven. The hosts took 11 corners to one for Augustana.

Mick Regan's bunch will be back in action at Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday, October 1. The Vikings will host Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7:30 p.m. as part of Homecoming festivities.
