Sammi Farkos and the Viking defense held Wisconsin-Whitewater without a shot on goal
Wednesday, but fell to the 13th-ranked Warhawks 1-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – An own goal surrendered by Augustana in the 55th minute was the only scoring Wednesday, as 13th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated the 20th-ranked Vikings 1-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field. The visiting Warhawks improved to 8-1 on the year, while
Scott Mejia's squad fell to 5-2.
Whitewater held a 6-4 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corners in a scoreless first half. The only shot put on frame came in the 45th minute by Augustana sophomore
Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.). It was stopped by Warhawk keeper Sara Klimisch.
It was a misplay in front of the Vikings' own net in the 55th minute that proved costly. Whitewater's Brianna Reid lofted a cross from the left side in the direction of teammate Carly Pottle, stationed at point blank range. The pass never reached Pottle, but deflected off an Augustana defender and into the goal, giving the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings got off three more shots in the match. Klimisch made saves on a pair of
Grace Iaquinta (Lincoln East HS, Lincoln, Neb.) tries and a Whitewater defender blocked a
Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) attempt, Augustana's last, in the 79th minute.
In the second half, the Vikings outshot the Warhawks 6-0 and had a 4-0 advantage in corners. For the match, the hosts held Whitewater without a shot on frame. Klimisch was credited with three saves.
Mejia's bunch faces another tough challenge on Saturday, September 24, traveling to Chicago to take on the fourth-ranked Maroons at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field at 1:00 p.m.
