Hannah Lohmeier follows through on a penalty kick that turned out to be a game-winner
Thursday at Thorson-Lucken Field. Augustana held on for a 1-0 win over Bethel.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana senior
Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) converted a penalty kick in the 38th minute Thursday for the only goal in a 1-0 win over Bethel at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach
Scott Mejia's Vikings won their 2016 season opener, while Bethel dropped to 0-1.
Augustana had outshot the visitors six to one through the first 37 minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net. However, in the 38th minute, Viking freshman
Natalia Pinto (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was pulled down in the box. That afforded Lohmeier the penalty kick opportunity and she made the most of it, beating Royal Dylan Melby to the keeper's left side.
In the 41st minute,
Sammi Farkos (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) got her head on a Bri Frys
(Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) corner, but Melby made the save to keep the score 1-0 as the sides went to intermission.
The second half was played mostly in the middle of the field, with just five shots taken. Four of those were by the hosts, including the only two that were put on frame.
For the match, the Vikings put seven of their 12 shots on goal, compared to two of three for Bethel. Melby recorded six saves, while her Augustana counterpart
Bailey Bradford (Deerfield HS, Riverwoods, Ill.) made two. The junior Viking keeper picked up the second win of her career and lowered her career goals against average to 0.47. Corners were six to three in favor of Augustana.
Next up for the Vikings is a Sunday, September 4 match against Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Thorson-Lucken Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
