Vikings drop 2016 season-opener 2-1 at Culver-Stockton

CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton scored in the 12th and 63rd minutes Thursday and defeated Augustana 2-1 at NX Level Field. The match was the 2016 season-opener for Coach Mick Regan's Vikings, while the host Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the year.
 
Mackenzie Northern put Culver-Stockton on top in the 12th minute, scoring his second goal of the year with the help pf a Alejandro Mentasti assist. The Wildcats kept the pressure on, but Augustana keeper Corey Mankins (Marysville HS, Marysville, Ohio) recorded three saves in a span of four and a half minutes. The sophomore finished with five for the half to keep the score 1-0 at intermission.
 
The Vikings just missed tying the match in the 54th minute, when Ryan Curry's (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) shot bounced off the crossbar.
 
Culver-Stockton went up 2-0 in the 63rd minute when Thomas Cooper scored off a Santiago Dirrocco corner.
 
Augustana got on the board in the final minute, when freshman Michael Peters (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) scored off an assist from sophomore Shonari Phillips (Tindley HS, Indianapolis, Ind.).
 
For the match, the hosts held an 18-9 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 margin in shots on frame. Culver-Stockton also had a 7-1 edge in corners. Mankins finished with eight saves and Robert Jones had three for the Wildcats. Culver-Stockton received three yellow cards and had John Hoemeyer ejected, while the Vikings received one caution.
 
Next up for Regan's crew is a 4:00 p.m. date at Aurora on Sunday, September 4.
