Augustana-Mount St. Joseph Preview

Linebacker Jack Asquini (7) and defensive tackle Keith King, Jr. (50) will lead a
veteran Augustana defense Saturday, as the Vikings travel to Cincinnati, Ohio
to open the 2016 season against Mount St. Joseph in the Austin E. Knowlton
Kickoff Classic.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Schueler Field in Cincinnati, Ohio will be the site as Augustana opens its 2016 football season on Saturday, September 3 versus Mount St. Joseph in the Austin E. Knowlton Kickoff Classic. The Vikings and Lions square off in the season opener for the fourth consecutive year. Augustana won at home in 2013 (20-10) and 2015 (42-39), while the Mount captured the 2014 contest 58-25 in Cincinnati. Those are the only three meetings ever between the teams.

This will be Coach Steve Bell's second season at the helm of the Viking ship. He returns 40 letter winners from last year's 4-6 squad, including 17 starters—seven on offense and 10 on defense. However, he must replace 2015 CCIW Offensive Player of the Year Sam Frasco at quarterback.

Sophomores Zachary Fuller (St. Patrick HS, Schiller Park, Ill.) and Luke Bleyer (Williamsville HS, Springfield, Ill.) emerged as the quarterback front runners in the preseason, with Fuller eventually earning the starting nod. He will benefit from the return of Danny Lattner (Fenwick HS, Riverside, Ill.), who led Augustana in receiving yards (45 catches, 672 yards, five touchdowns) a year ago. Three starting offensive lineman also return, led by second team All-CCIW pick Tommy Wilson (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) at tackle. All three running backs who logged carries in 2015 are back as well.

The leaders on defense figure to be senior linebacker Jack Asquini (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and senior safety Frank Kalble (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.). Both were second team all-conference selections in 2015, when Asquini led the team with 108 tackles and the CCIW with an average of 11.3 stops per game. Kalble had 81 tackles and his average of 9.1 per game ranked fourth in the conference. Returning corners Daniel Watson (Peoria HS, Peoria, Ill.) and Travon Aldridge (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) keyed the CCIW's top pass defense in 2015. Watson had 66 tackles and led the Vikings with four interceptions. Aldridge led the conference and ranked 10th in the nation in passes defended.

Junior Jacob Stytz (Minooka HS, Channahon, Ill.), who was perfect on 40 point-after attempts last year and converted five of nine field goals, resumes his placekicking duties and will also take over punting chores.

The Vikings' opponent on Saturday, Mount St. Joseph, finished 7-3 in 2015 and tied for second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference at 6-2. The Lions were a perfect 5-0 at Schueler Field.

Coach Rod Huber's offense averaged 434.7 total yards and 38.8 points per game last season. Quarterback Mike Williams, who rushed for 425 yards, will move to running back, while redshirt freshman Quinn Farrell takes over behind center. Farrell threw for 522 yards and six touchdowns in two games a year ago, including the contest against Augustana. Leading receivers Garrett Weaver (44-995-17) and Ronnell Colbert (41-408-1) are also back. Weaver was the HCAC's Freshman of the Year and a second team all-conference selection. Offensive linemen Colan Beare and Cole Tepe were also second team All-HCAC.

Junior linebacker Jermaine Drake led the Lions in tackles with 66 in 2015 and tied for the team lead in interceptions with three. He was a second team all-league pick, along with sophomore nose tackle Cory Hardin.
