KENOSHA, Wis. – Senior
Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) carried Augustana to a win in game one Saturday and sophomore
Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) spearheaded a 15-run Viking explosion and picked up the win in relief in game two, as Coach
Kris Kistler's club swept a doubleheader from Carthage—3-2 in 11 innings and 15-11. Augustana improved to 13-15 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW, while the Lady Reds fell to 6-8 on the year and 0-2 in the league.
Augustana is back in action on Sunday, April 10, traveling to Chicago, Illinois to take on North Park in a noon doubleheader.
AUGUSTANA 3, CARTHAGE 2 (11)
Anderson took matters into her own hands in Saturday's opener, going all 11 innings in the circle and delivering a two-run home run in the top of the 11th which proved to be the game winner.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on two walks and an infield hit by Hailey Rothstein. Anderson stranded two Lady Reds to escape further trouble.
Katie Herron, who also went the distance for Carthage, shut Augustana out through the first five innings, but the Vikings tied it in the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) stroked a one-out double to left and one out later, classmate
Alaina Hofmann (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) knocked her in with a two-bagger to center.
That would be the last run until the 11th. The Lady Reds threatened in the eighth, but Augustana first baseman Maddie McGuire
(Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) threw out the potential winning run at the plate on the back half of a double play. The Vikings left two runners on in the ninth.
Brittany Kellett's
(The Woodlands HS, The Woodlands, Texas) one-out single preceded Anderson's blast to left center in the 11th that put the visitors ahead 3-1. Carthage plated a run in the bottom half, but Anderson retired the final two batters with runners at first and second.
Anderson evened her record at 8-8, while Herron fell to 3-3 on the year.
AUGUSTANA 15, CARTHAGE 11
Augustana rode three big innings to a 15-11 win in the nightcap.
After the Vikings, the designated home team, took the lead with three run in the bottom of the second, the Lady Reds answered with five in the top of the third. Kristine Herdegan had a two-run single and Rothstein a three-run homer in the inning.
Carthage's lead didn't last long, as Augustana matched that five spot in the bottom of the frame. Blumberg and Anderson had RBI singles, Grandt an RBI double and freshman
Haley Ruch (Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.) a two-run single.
After a scoreless fourth inning, both teams put up big numbers in the fifth. The Lady Reds regained the lead with four runs in the top half. Sam McCloud's three-run homer to left knocked Viking starter
Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.) out of the circle. Grandt came on and got Augustana out of the inning to keep the deficit at 9-8. Ruch's RBI single in the bottom half scored freshman pinch runner
Taylor Belo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) with the tying run. Sophomore
Lauren Severson (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) singled in the go-ahead run and the Vikings got insurance with Carly Wislon's two-run single and a two-run double by Grandt. By the end of the inning, Augustana had scored seven and led 15-9.
Carthage got to Grandt for two runs in the top of the seventh, but she closed out the Lady Reds to pick up her third win in seven decisions.
Grandt went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four knocked in and Ruch was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
