Augustana wins CCIW opener 26-0 over Carroll

Junior Jared Hawkins set a school record with eight assists Saturday, as Augustana opened
CCIW play with a 26-0 win over Carroll at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana opened CCIW play Saturday with a 26-0 whitewash of Carroll at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings set five school records in improving to 7-5 on the year and 1-0 in the league. The Pioneers dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the league.
 
Just 35 seconds in, freshman Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) tallied his 11th goal of the season. Junior Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) recorded the first of his school-record eight assists on the play. Senior Alexander Crescenti's (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) 30th goal of the year made it 2-0 less than a minute later.
 
After Gallo scored again, senior Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) and freshman Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) each tallied back-to-back goals and Hawkins capped the first quarter scoring with his 15th goal of the season to put Augustana up 8-0 after one.
 
Eight different Vikings scored a total of nine goals in the second quarter as the hosts took a 17-0 lead to the halftime break. Crescenti was the only Augustana player to find the net twice in the period.
 
Coach Dan Torie continued to spread around the playing time in the second 30 minutes. Again, eight different players accounted for the Vikings' nine second-half goals, with junior Brady Welvaert (Holmen HS, Holmen, Wis.) scoring twice.
 
In all, 14 Augustana players scored in the contest, with nine dishing out at least one assist. In addition to Hawkins' single-game assist mark, the Vikings set team records for goals, assists (21), points (47) and faceoffs won (26).
 
Whorwell led the way with four goals, while Crescenti and Davis scored three each. Whorwell and Davis each doled out three assists. Sophomore Potter McKay (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) won all 10 of his faceoffs and led Augustana with seven ground balls, one more than Welvaert.
 
Senior Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) went just 11 minutes in goal, but earned the win. Sophomore Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), one of three Augustana reserves to mind the net, led the Vikings with two saves.
 
The hosts finished with advantages of 66-3 in shots and 54-15 in ground balls and won 26 of 30 faceoffs.
 
Next up for Torie's squad is a Saturday, April 16 date at Dubuque. That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
