at Elmhurst.ELMHURST, Ill. – Augustana bounced back from a 15-9 game one setback Tuesday, getting a great start from sophomore right-hander
Brad Dubow (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and a three-run homer from freshman
Nick Mosele (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) to win the twin bill nightcap 5-1 at Butterfield Park. Coach
Greg Wallace's club moved to 14-8 on the year and 3-2 in the CCIW. The Bluejays are now 13-8 overall and 2-3 in the league.
ELMHURST 15, AUGUSTANA 9 The Vikings dug themselves an 8-1 hole in Tuesday's opener. The game was tied 1-1 after one inning, but the hosts put three on the board in the third and four in the fourth. Trey Compton's two-run single in the fourth was the big hit.
Augustana trimmed the deficit to 8-5 with four runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman
Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk from Elmhurst starter Mike Rostine. Senior
Nathan Gray (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled to right and classmate
John Swiderski (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) followed with an RBI double to left.
Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) and junior
Mitchel Ruh (Hinckley-Big Rock HS, Big Rock, Ill.) each drove in a run with a single and a groundout, respectively and sophomore
Jack Hallmark (Cherry Creek HS, Englewood, Colo.) knocked Gingerich in with an RBI single.
The Bluejays came right back with four runs in the bottom half, however. Crompton knocked in the final two with a double.
The Vikings plated two in the sixth and senior
Jeff Prior (Rock Canyon HS, Lone Tree, Colo.) added a two-run single in the seventh, but the Bluejays kept them at bay with a run each in the sixth, seventh and eighth.
Sophomore
Peter Doughty (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) went 3-for-5 to lead a 15-hit Augustana attack and Gray, Swiderski, Gingerich and Hallmark added two hits apiece, but Elmhurst battered three Viking pitchers for 21 hits. Reagan McReynolds and Ben Havel had four hits each and Compton drove in five runs.
Freshman right-hander
Mike Powers (Benet Academy, Westmont, Ill.) started and took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year. Rostine got the win to improve to 3-1.
AUGUSTANA 5, ELMHURST 1 Despite not getting a ball out of the infield, the Bluejays touched Dubow for a run in the bottom of the first in game two.
Although that would be the last run surrendered by Augustana hurlers, the visitors looked to be in trouble, with Elmhurst starter Justin Luzzi shutting the Vikings out through seven innings. Augustana stranded two runners each in the fifth and sixth before finally breaking through in the eighth.
Gray led off with an infield hit that knocked out Luzzi. After a Swiderski sacrifice, Gingerich reached on an error. One out later, pinch hitter
Carter Amundsen (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) delivered a two-out single to left, plating Gray with the tying run. Sophomore
Tommy Kiriakopoulos (Huntley HS, Lake in the Hills, Ill.) then beat out an infield hit that scored Gingerich with the go-ahead run. That brought up Mosele, who had come on as a defensive replacement at shortstop in the top of the seventh. He took a Ben Modesitt offering down the left field line for a home run that put the Vikings up 5-1.
Meanwhile, Dubow was handcuffing the Bluejays. He faced the minimum of 15 batters in the second through sixth innings before stranding a pair of runners in the seventh. Junior
Nick Refka (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) came on to start the eighth and finished up for his third save of the year.
Dubow (2-0) allowed five hits and one walk while fanning four in seven innings. Refka gave up one hit and struck out three in his two innings.
Gingerich and Gray each had two of Augustana's eight hits.
