Senior Jerrell Collymore won 13 of 21 faceoffs and corralled seven ground
balls Saturday as Augustana earned a share of the CCIW championship
with a 10-7 win over Carthage at Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana outscored Carthage 6-2 in the second half Saturday, wiping out a one-goal halftime deficit and snatching a share of the CCIW championship with a 10-7 Senior Day win at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings improved to 11-6 overall and 4-1 in the league, while the Red Men dropped to 7-9 on the season and 3-1 in the CCIW. Augustana, Carthage and Illinois Wesleyan (11-4, 3-1) split this year's regular season title three ways, with the Red Men and Titans each awarded a victory for standings purposes when Carroll couldn't field a team against them.
Carthage took its only lead of the game, 5-4, in disheartening fashion just before halftime. Following a timeout with seven seconds left, Red Men defender Jack DeVeny lofted a length of the field pass to Luke Seydel who found the net with just :00.7 showing on the clock.
The Vikings bounced right back in the third however.
Jonathan Bryk's
(Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) unassisted goal at the 8:29 mark tied the game at 5-all and
Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) added another four minutes later to put the hosts up 6-5. Carthage's Andy Szun converted an assist from Andrew Krom at 3:52 to forge one final tie, but Bryk scored again in the final minute of the period to put Augustana up for good.
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) gave the Vikings a two-goal cushion when he scored with 13:54 left to play. The teams then went scoreless for 10 minutes before
Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) found the net at 3:50 to make it 9-6.
Red Man Jared Ferrell and Hawkins traded goals to complete the afternoon's scoring, but Augustana missed clinching the top seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament by the narrowest of margins. With the Vikings needing one more goal to win the tiebreaker for the top seed and home field advantage, Hawkins' attempt with 12 seconds remaining hit the post and bounded nearly to midfield.
The hosts jumped on top early, getting goals by
Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) and freshman
Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.), along with one by Davis in the game's first two minutes.
After Carthage cut it to 3-2, Crescenti scored again with 1:35 left in the first. However, Krom scored with just 16 seconds left in the period, sparking a 3-0 Red Men run that was capped by Seydel's halftime buzzer-beater.
Bryk, Crescenti and Davis, all seniors, scored twice for Augustana along with Hawkins, a junior. Gleason, another of the 14 Viking seniors honored Saturday, scored once, as did Gallo. Senior goalie
Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) made eight saves and improved to 11-6 on the year. Senior
Jerrell Collymore (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) won 13 of 21 faceoffs and snared seven ground balls, one more than classmates
Taylor McGinnis (New Trier HS, Kenilworth, Ill.) and Crescenti and junior
Brady Welvaert (Holmen HS, Holmen, Wis.).
Another senior,
Tyler Amidei (Vernon Hills HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.), finished the day with two ground balls. Also honored Saturday were
Cody Speroff (Lincoln Park HS, Chicago, Ill.),
Brad Dodge (Lyons HS, La Grange, Ill.),
Andrew Miller (Waukesha North HS, Waukesha, Wis.),
Jon Herdler (Webster Grove HS, Webster Groves, Mo.),
Daniel Fulton (Denver East HS, Denver, Colo.) and
Kyle Doner (Peak to Peak Academy, Erie, Colo.).
Augustana opens CCIW Tournament play on Wednesday, May 4 against Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Illinois. The Vikings were the champions of the inaugural conference tournament a year ago.
