Vikings clinch no less than a share of CCIW title with 19-1 win over Elmhurst

Senior Emily Handrahan had seven assists--equaling the second-most ever in a game at
Augustana--in the Vikings' 19-1 win over Elmhurst at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and junior Anne Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) each scored four goals Saturday and senior Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) dished out seven assists to lead Augustana to a 19-1 win over Elmhurst at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings improved to 14-1 overall and 5-0 in the CCIW, clinching at least a share of this year's conference title and locking up home field advantage for the conference tournament. The Bluejays dropped to 4-9 on the year and 0-4 in the CCIW.
 
Maduro found the net three times as Augustana jumped to a 6-0 lead less than seven minutes in. Junior Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) assisted on one of Maduro's goals, as well as one by senior Quinn Foley (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.).
 
Freshman Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.), senior Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Hopkins added goals and the lead reached 9-0 with 17:52 left in the half.
 
At the 15:49 mark, Ellen Brown got Elmhurst on the board, but Maduro and Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) each parlayed a Handrahan assist into a goal, making the score 11-1 and triggering the running clock with 12:06 remaining before halftime. Hopkins, Bennett and Nolan each scored in the final 4:13 and the Vikings led 14-1 at the break. Handrahan dealt out assists number six and seven on the goals by Bennett and Nolan.
 
After Hopkins used a Foley assist to make it 15-1 four and a minutes into the second half, the final four tallies were all put up by Augustana freshmen. Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) scored her fourth goal of the year, Micheli Oliver (Berthoud HS, Berthoud, Colo.) her second and Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge Ill.) her seventh and eighth of the season.
 
Sophomore Madalynne Russell (Noblesville HS, Noblesville, Ind.) went the distance in goal, recording three saves and earning her first win. In addition to her four goals, Hopkins had team highs of four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Nolan had three goals and 11 draw controls and Mayer added three assists.
 
On Wednesday, April 27, Coach Meredith Newman's squad travels to Waukesha, Wisconsin looking to lock up the program's fourth consecutive undefeated conference championship in its CCIW finale versus Carroll. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
