ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana senior lefty
Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) threw a complete game shutout in game one Saturday, but Elmhurst bounced back with a 7-4 win in the nightcap as the teams split a twin bill at Carver Field. The Vikings are now 15-19 overall and 5-7 in the CCIW and the Bluejays are 14-16 on the year and 3-8 in the league. Coach
Kris Kistler's club travels to Monmouth, Illinois on Sunday, April 24 to face the Scots in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
AUGUSTANA 4, ELMHURST 0
Anderson scattered eight hits in posting her 16th complete game and third shutout of the season in the opener. She walked one and fanned seven to earn her 10th win against nine losses.
The top of the order carried Augustana offensively, as leadoff hitter
Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored an one driven in and number two hitter
Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) had three hits in four at-bats with two scored and two knocked in. Each belted her second home run of the year.
After Anderson stranded six Bluejays in the first three innings, the Vikings jumped on top in the bottom of the third. Wilson led off with a homer to center and Blumberg followed with a double down the left field line. Two outs later, sophomore
Alaina Hofmann (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) singled to left, scoring Blumberg with the second run.
It was Wilson and Blumberg teaming up again in the fourth. Blumberg followed Wilson's one-out single with a homer to center for a 4-0 Augustana lead.
Anderson settled in and faced just two batters over the minimum in the final four innings. She also had the Vikings' other base hit in the game. Starter Stefanie Sanidas went five innings and suffered the loss for Elmhurst.
ELMHURST 7, AUGUSTANA 4
A five-run Bluejay second spelled the difference in game two.
Augustana—the designated visitor—took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Sophomore
Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) led off with a single, moved to second on a Hofmann sacrifice and to third on a wild pitch. Freshman
Haley Ruch (Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.) knocked her in with a double to left. However, Elmhurst got to Grandt for five runs in the bottom half. Brianna Thompson's two-run double to right center was the big hit.
Brittany Kellett's
(The Woodland HS, The Woodlands, Texas) two-run homer to center in the top of the third drew the Vikings to within 5-3, but the Bluejays answered in the bottom of the frame when Morganne Evans touched Augustana freshman
Danielle Klatt (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) for a two-run single.
The Vikings plated their final run in the top of the seventh when Grandt singled in freshman
Taylor Belo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.).
Grandt gave up five runs in two innings and took the loss, dropping to 3-5 on the year. Senior
Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.) relieved Klatt to start the fourth and finished up with three scoreless innings. Bluejay Stephanie Sturino went the distance for the win.
Blumberg, Grandt, Kellett and Anderson each had two of Augustana's 11 hits.
